Class Experience

Are word problems in math impossible as they look? Not really, if you have the tools to figure it out.
In this class students will learn to take apart the math word problem using four basic steps: understand the question being asked, decide what strategies to use, remember how to perform the operations in the right order, and know what exactly does it mean to check your work. We will examine each step and then practice it, and we'll finish up by successfully solving some actual word problems.
We will use basic addition, subtraction, multiplication and division.

Teacher expertise and credentials
I am a certified teacher, and I have been an educator for more than 30 years. As a private tutor I help students to understand that impossible math! Also I work with ESOL students to develop English language proficiency using subject area materials (science, social studies, literature, and more), and I've been a classroom teacher in private school at the middle school and high school level for over eight years. My BA is in Special Education and my MA is in ESOL. I can help your child to understand, including that thing that has been so impossible.

My teaching philosophy is based in the notion that everyone can learn: we all learn in different ways, and so I try to present in as many different ways as possible. Another aspect of my teaching philosophy is in autonomous learning. It isn't enough just to be told what to do -- I think it is also important for students to learn how to figure things out for themselves, to dig deeper, to explore and experiment.

And with all that in mind, I think that questions are important, discussions and explanations are important, and I really want to help students to make sense of it all.
