10 Steps to Better Singing: The Fundamentals of Voice - Private Lessons Course

This course is geared towards TWO TYPES of students ages 10-18: 

1. The "beginner" singer who is newly interested in voice lessons. These  foundational lessons WITH extended after class homework  will cover most of what they need to learn to be successful in future voice lessons, singing in their communities for school, church, competitions and etc.  The voice takes time and practice to develop, but with the right foundation students are more knowledgable and have a better understanding of what they want to or can do next in their musical aspirations. 

2. OR The "Intermediate" singer who's had voice lessons or choral training in the past with other teachers, but does not know some basic fundamentals of music yet regarding proper vocal technique, correct terminology, or how to follow both written and audio music.  Or potentially the intermediate singer who has only trained in "pop" or "classical" and does not know why or how their voice struggles with certain songs/ranges/styles.   These students will need to learn more about voice science, the way their own voice works, and how to meet certain musical goals with this knowledge. 

Students who become equipped with the basic core understandings of how the voice works, and how to best sing songs in various styles, alongside of how to follow sheet music, would find that they are more in control of their voice and will be able to improve their vocals in less time and with some serious skill.  As a voice teacher, not just a vocal coach, I do try to teach the students how to not just model me or my voice, but understand the mechanics of their voice, while also growing in musical skills that are foundational to their success. 

*Lessons will follow the general outline in the syllabus, however each lesson will still be tailored some to the student to meet their specific need.  The pace will remain the same, and if some students practice much more in-between lessons we may be able to get more done than what is listed in the syllabus.  If students do not practice between lessons, the course may go at a slower pace and be incomplete. Practice, and homework is necessary in this course.

**Make-Up Lessons* I allow one make-up lesson per 10 week session, and would need to be notified a minimum of 24 hours in advanced to do so.  The time the make-up lesson occurs would be based on my current schedule and various options will be offered.  The sooner I know about an absence the more likely I can accommodate preferred make up times. If I log into the course and the student does not show up for 10 minutes, per Outschool Policy, I will log out and leave a note (with some homework) for the student. 

***Devices To Use* Students need to be at a computer desktop, laptop, or using a stationary  iPad to take this course.  I will not teach students who log in on a phone as we would not be able to utilize sheet music, powerpoint slides, or the best audio settings via a phone. 

****Voice Lesson Environment* It is vital to have a space where students can hear, have good internet connection, and not feel insecure or embarrassed while singing out.  A quiet space where they can sit or stand in a relaxed manner will improve their learning experience greatly.  I will NOT teach students in a noisy public environment - no exceptions.  If a student logs in moving around and holding their iPad while: in the car, on a train, on a boat, in a shopping center, at a party etc...I will let them know they need to be in a proper environment for lessons and if that cannot happen within the first ten minutes then we end the lesson and I send virtual homework instead.
