Description
Class Experience
* This is part 2 of the Fluency Matters Class. However, students are welcome to join at any time and are not required to take part 1 of the course first. Part 1 and 2 both focus on reading fluently. During Part 2, our strategy lessons and games will focus on learning multisyllabic words. I've found that most of my students need additional practice with these longer words in order to help them to grow in fluency. In this ongoing class, students will read fiction and nonfiction passages and...
Read with sufficient accuracy and fluency to support comprehension. Read grade-level text with purpose and understanding. Read grade-level prose and poetry orally with accuracy, appropriate rate, and expression on successive readings. Use context to confirm or self-correct word recognition and understanding, rereading as necessary.
I am an experienced elementary teacher and a certified reading specialist.
Students will be given a passage to print out (or read on the computer). I prefer them not to practice the passage before class so that I can have an accurate time for their first reading. However, please review any words that the student underlined during class. After class, I also encourage students to read and practice the passage again at home in order to continue increasing their speed and fluency.
2 files available upon enrollmentIt will be helpful if students can print the passage that we will be reading before the class starts. The new passage will be posted in the Outschool Classroom. If you are not able to print the passage, it's ok. Students can still read the passage on the computer screen. Please bring paper, a pencil, and a smile to class.
Students will be assessed by their improvement in accuracy, reading rate, expression, and comprehension.
40 minutes per week in class, and an estimated 0 - 1 hours per week outside of class.
