FLEX CLASS Herbal Studies: Introduction to Wildcrafting (ages 8-12)
Class experience
This is the FLEXIBLE SCHEDULE version of the course! There will not be any live meetings! There will, however, be plenty of opportunities for interacting and sharing in the classroom space, including weekly challenges. It is important that you spend time outside of class working with the plants - that is where the course content comes to life! Please try to get outside and complete the weekly challenges and please post in the classroom so we can have an active discussion. It's fine if...
I am a graduate of The School of Evolutionary Herbalism where I completed the Vitalist Herbal Practitioner Program for Clinical Skills and Holistic Therapies under the tutelage of Sajah Popham. I have also taken courses on the topic of herbalism taught by Matthew Wood, Judith Hill, and Asia Suler. However, my greatest teachers have been the plants themselves. I have spent decades listening to them, sitting with them, harvesting them, reading about them, and crafting my own remedies and that personal connection and experience has been invaluable. For the past 5 years I have taught my Introduction to Wildcrafting class to over 1000 children and I have several groups of students who have continued studying with me for 4+ years. I truly believe that teaching our children about the natural world is the single most important thing that we can do for the future of our beautiful planet and teaching it through the lens of healing might just be the most important thing we do for the future of humanity.
-------- What is Provided -------- This course includes a 65-page printable PDF course-book with all of the content covered during the course (see outline above) as well as fun activities to complete outside of class (cut and paste exercises, word searches, recipes, cooperative card game, printable plant ID sheets) and detailed monographs of the plants discussed during the course. The course-book will be delivered in four parts as we progress. -------- Recommended Supplies -------- These supplies will make it easier to harvest and process plants when you are adventuring outside of class. Most of this list will be easy to find around the house! 3-ring binder and hole punch for course materials & Plant ID sheets Glue stick (for cut and paste activities) Crayons or colored pencils (for coloring pages) Backpack or basket for harvesting plants outside of class Gardening gloves Scissors Trowel A field guide for your region (I will provide some resources in class!) Tea strainer for loose tea Storage bottles, jars, or containers (for storing dried herbs, tincturing, and infusing plant material into oil or vinegar) Cotton string or twine (for tying and drying plant material)
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
**ATTENTION PARENTS! The information in this class is for educational purposes only. The instructor of this course disclaims any liability in connection with the use of this information. While all of the plants we are covering in this course are considered mild and safe for children, ingesting wild plants is inherently risky. Plants can easily be mistaken and every individual will vary in their physiological response to a plant that is touched or consumed. Please do not attempt self-treatment of a medical problem without consulting a qualified health practitioner.**
