Many chess books and courses focus on the middle phase of the game or the endgame, but those parts of chess all arise out of the players' opening moves. A strong opening can lead to powerful attack combinations later on; poor choices at the start can weaken a player's chances and opportunities for success - or even precipitate disaster. This course will introduce students to a variety of King Pawn openings. More importantly, though, it will show learners how to make the most of the beginning phase of a game and avoid common (and sometimes deadly) errors. Those taking this course should have a solid understanding of the game's rules and, preferably, know chess notation. They should be prepared to think through positions with me and share their ideas with the group. I've found that learners who participate actively in classes like this make the most progress and have the most fun. During the class we'll take a look at these openings: Sessions I and II: Ruy Lopez Session III: Giuoco Piano Session IV King's Gambit Accepted Session V: King's Gambit Declined Session VI: Falkbeer Counter-Gambit Session VII: Philidor Defense Session VIII: Center Game Needless to say, we won't examine these openings comprehensively. Instead, we'll consider ways in which they can help players develop their pieces effectively and build a strong positional foundation for middle game attacks.

Teacher expertise and credentials
When I retired in 2016 after more than thirty years in California classrooms, I figured that my days of teaching were pretty much behind me. As it turned out, though, that assumption was completely off the mark. I soon started teaching online courses in German and English to people in many corners of the globe - China, New Zealand, England, Canada, Germany - and enjoyed it a lot. In my spare time I also began helping to coach local elementary students in an afternoon chess group; because of the pandemic, I've now been meeting with them online since September 2020.
I believe in introducing new concepts and information in every lesson - that way each course develops momentum and energy. Also crucial is strategic repetition: material that we've already covered needs to be explored again now and then so that learners gain a deeper and stronger understanding of the material.
In my spare time I enjoy reading, gardening, playing the piano, and writing. In fact, I've already published two books—Your Ernst and Feeding Time: Tales of My Cat Companions.
