US Grade Pre-Kindergarten - 1
In this flexible course students will turn into problem solvers who have one mission: to solve the math word problem. This is an introduction to solving math word problems with numbers 1-20. **Please Note: This is a 4-week flexible schedule course, allowing your learner to watch the videos and practice the skills when it is convenient for you. There are no live meetings for this course, but student interaction will take place on the message board and in an online platform called flipgrid. *Weekly Topics* Week 1: Space Addition Word Problem Week 2: Volcanos Subtraction Word Problems Week 3: Oceans Missing Addends ex: 3+__=8 Week 4: Caves Missing Addends ex: ___+7=8 *Format* In this class your child has 2 different options for watching the videos and completing the work for each week: Option #1: I will upload videos and worksheets into the classroom each week. This option is great if you want to print the worksheet and have your child fill out the worksheet during the recorded lesson. Option #2: Each week I will upload a Nearpod lesson that your child can complete for the week. This option is great if you want your child to complete the lesson more independently. The worksheets are uploaded into the Nearpod lesson for your child to complete the lesson on their computer. Using a touchscreen or i-pad is usually easier for younger students to color and complete worksheets online. With this option your child can still print the worksheets and complete them with crayons and a pencil. *Each week* - 2 videos will be posted in the message board on Monday as well as math worksheets for students to practice the specific type of math word problem that we are focusing on for that week. Each lesson has an optional worksheet that will be provided. -Directions for student on how to record a video of themselves sharing their answers on flipgrid as well as the link for that specific week -Nearpod lesson code (this nearpod lesson will include the videos and worksheets for the entire week as well as interactive games to increase your child's understanding of the science and math concepts being taught) -6 additional worksheets are provided each week that will focus on the math concept presented in the lesson. Week 1: addition Week 2: subtraction Week 3: Missing Addends Week 4: Start unknown *Class Interaction* -Students will be asked to share their answers on an online platform called flipgrid. Students can post these through the website or through an android or iphone app. This will enable learners to see the answers of other learners and have the ability to easily respond. (pdf and video directions will be posted in the message board) -The teacher will respond to all videos posted in flipgrid or the classroom message board. *Video Lessons* -In this class students we will work on science, writing, reading, and math skills while working on math problems. -Learners will learn pieces of information about the topic for that week (space, volcanoes, ocean, or caves) and collect 4 puzzle pieces that will be used to unlock a math word problem. -Learners will be given a math problem which the teacher will read out loud. Then learners are given 5 minutes to solve this problem. They are encouraged to use tangible ways of coming up with a solution but they are not required to use 1 specific way of answering. If they figure out their answer before the timer goes off they will be encouraged to test their solution by finding a solution to the problem in a different way. -Once students find solutions to the problem they will be encouraged to write their answer in sentence form. This helps students prepare to share their answers out loud. Then students will be encouraged to record a video of themselves reading their answers out loud and posting them on the message board. This encourages communication skills in young learners. -Learners do not need the ability to read the problem to be able to solve it. Some students struggle with reading while flourishing in math. Giving these students math word problems usually gives them a sense of confidence in the midst of learning reading and comprehension skills. It's a great way to reinforce both reading and math skills. -The answers for both problems will be in a separate video. This ensures that students are confident in their answer and have communicated their answer in the message board or on flipgrid before the teacher tells them which answer is correct.
