Etymology102: Using English Language Word Origins to Become Better at Spelling

Students will be asked to spell a list of  English words on a piece of paper. Even if the students do not know the  English word, they will be encouraged to give the spelling their best guess. They will not be asked to share their spelling. Then, after all the words have been dictated, we will look at the correct spelling together. Next, we will discuss the etymologies/ word origins of each English word. Students will be encouraged to add to the discussion. For instance, maybe they know a word with a similar meaning or a similar spelling. We will explore the country of origin, the part of speech, and the word story of each word. Students will be encouraged to use the English words in sentences to enhance their understanding. 
Additionally, when telling the word story, I will use vivid language, facial expressions, and props to help the students stay focused and engaged. Furthermore, students will not be required to have any previous knowledge on word origins. Every student could benefit from learning the history of words. When learning the history and origin of one English word, it sparks our curiosity to learn about more English words and Latin and Greek roots. Learning English language word origins has a direct correlation with improved Spelling of English words!
