In this fun and interactive class, students will gain the skills necessary for reading, while seeing their favorite Encanto characters. Students should come to this class with a prior knowledge of the letter sounds and how to sound out simple words. We will take their prior knowledge to hammer down sounding out more complex words. Once students have come to class for a few weeks, reading more difficult words from the stories I create should become easier as they build confidence in reading. Students can join this class at any time. The lessons will not build on each other. Activities included in this class include: -A very quick review of the short and long vowel sounds. -Students will be given their own random blend to read for the class. The blend may be long or short. -Students will get a quick review of marking vowels and be asked to mark and read their own word. -Students will learn and review digraphs and diphthongs. -Students will take turns reading sentences from an Encanto-themed story that I create as the teacher. During this time, students will be in the "spot light" and get a little bit of individualized instruction and help with their sentence. -Students will write one short sentence that is in an Encanto song. This will serve as their handwriting component, and it will give extra practice with reading. We will then sing that song, and students will be able to recognize the sentence they just wrote. Here is an example of what the first four weeks of class would cover: Week of 8/8: Vowel sounds review, Blend reading (mo, bu, fa, te, gi, la), Marking Vowel Practice (like, sand, bump, teal, home, frog), Diphthong/ digraph review, Short story reading practice, Handwriting Practice (This is our home.) Week of 8/15: Vowel sounds review, Blend reading (mi, be, fe, to, ga, lo), Marking Vowel Practice (lost, save, beep, tire, fist, foam), Diphthong/ digraph review, Short story reading practice, Handwriting Practice (I can't move the mountains.) Week of 8/22: Vowel sounds review, Blend reading (ma, bo, fi, tu, ge, lu), Marking Vowel Practice (leaf, seal, bite, twin, thin, toad), Diphthong/ digraph review, Short story reading practice, Handwriting Practice (Pressure like a drip, drip, drip...) Week of 8/29: Vowel sounds review, Blend reading (me, ba, fu, ti, go, le), Marking Vowel Practice (trod, stop, boss, twist, hole, frost), Diphthong/ digraph review, Short story reading practice, Handwriting Practice (We don't talk about Bruno)

Teacher expertise and credentials
Hello! My name is Jessie Bethea! I teach preschool age students here on Outschool. My degree is in Elementary Education with a minor in Studio Art. This is my seventh year of teaching, and I have loved every minute of my journey as an educator! I have taught both in public and private schools, and have experience in second grade, fifth grade, elementary art, and special education. However, I have recently left the classroom to stay home with my two children and homeschool them. My children are aged 4 and 18 months old. I am now working from home to help support my family, while homeschooling my children. Outschool provides the perfect opportunity for me because I get to do what I love, while also being there for my babies. My teaching style is fun, hands-on, and lively. I love to make my students laugh and have fun. My favorite part about teaching is giving struggling students the support they need to succeed! I can't wait to meet my new students on this platform. I'll see you in the classroom!
