Class Experience

US Grade 2 - 4
In this four-week-long book club, students will read the book Encanto and engage in meaningful discussions, activities, and vocabulary-building skills. They will work on reading comprehension questions each week along with story element activities. This book club is great for students who want to work on their comprehension skills, while reading an engaging text with meaningful themes and characters.

**Students must purchase this book prior to class as the book will not be read aloud in class. Students are expected to read the chapters on their own or with parental guidance throughout the week and engage in the lessons and activities at their own pace. The book can be purchased on Amazon "Encanto Deluxe Junior Novel (Disney)" and may also be found in bookstores or at the library.**

Week 1: Students will read the prologue and chapters 1-5 in Encanto: Deluxe Junior Novel. Before reading, students will watch a short pre-reading video that will help them set their purpose for reading. After reading, students will watch a post-reading video that will walk them through this week's character activity and will introduce the comprehension and vocabulary questions for these chapters. Students can then watch the third video to go over the answers to the comprehension questions and to learn more about the vocabulary words that were introduced.

Week 2: Students will read chapters 6-10 in Encanto: Deluxe Junior Novel. Before reading, students will watch a short pre-reading video that will help them set their purpose for reading. After reading, students will watch a post-reading video that will walk them through this week's setting and plot activity and will introduce the comprehension and vocabulary questions for these chapters. Students can then watch the third video to go over the answers to the comprehension questions and to learn more about the vocabulary words that were introduced.

Week 3: Students will read chapters 11-15 in Encanto: Deluxe Junior Novel. Before reading, students will watch a short pre-reading video that will help them set their purpose for reading. After reading, students will watch a post-reading video that will walk them through this week's story theme activity and will introduce the comprehension and vocabulary questions for these chapters. Students can then watch the third video to go over the answers to the comprehension questions and to learn more about the vocabulary words that were introduced.

Week 4: Students will read chapters 16-19 in Encanto: Deluxe Junior Novel. Before reading, students will watch a short pre-reading video that will help them set their purpose for reading. After reading, students will watch a post-reading video that will walk them through this week's point of view activity and will introduce the comprehension and vocabulary questions for these chapters. Students can then watch the third video to go over the answers to the comprehension questions and to learn more about the vocabulary words that were introduced.

Participation in the classroom is required in the following ways:
*Students will post their completed activities (weekly) to the classroom page (characters, setting and plot, theme, point of view). They should provide their classmates with positive comments about their work.
*Students will complete weekly Nearpod and Google Slides lessons to work on comprehension skills and vocabulary.
*Students may also post their completed comprehension and vocabulary work to the classroom page or the teacher message center for feedback and guidance (optional).

The teacher will provide feedback to students within 24 hours in most cases. This includes answering questions, providing clarification about concepts, and correcting student work.

Other Details

Parental Guidance
This book is based on the Disney movie. In both the prologue and chapter 18, the author tells the reader that the grandfather dies at the hands of the swordsmen. Although the two scenes are brief, it is important to note. This is a sensitive topic and we will not be focusing on the topic of his death during our book club. One of the themes that could come up for children when they are exploring themes in week 3 is "grief", but the themes in this book are mainly positive ones. I will be focusing on the positive during my instruction and in the pre-recorded lesson.
