Earth Day Animal Activists & Conservation Conversation: Chat & Craft Class
Class experience
US Grade 2 - 5
April 22 is Earth Day! Let's celebrate by learning about how to be an animal activist. Animals can teach us so much about ourselves and the beautiful world we live in. Unfortunately, many are at risk of extinction. This class celebrates people in history that have fought for animal rights. It answers questions such as: What is an endangered animal? Who decided to make a difference? How can kids help? This class is a similar format to the Not All Sheroes Wear Capes, but the content is...
Students will learn about effective strategies to educate others, participate in activism, and have fun while doing it.
I am a trained teacher and social justice studies scholar. I have extensive history working as an activist and teaching about social justice issues. I've started animal-rights clubs and am actively invested in spreading word about how to protect endangered species (and include kids in the fight!).

I try my best to send personalized messages to parents after, but this is in no way a formal assessment, just a reflection :) I learn so much from each learner!Grades Offered
Our craft will be making protest/awareness signs to advocate for animals! Students will at least need: -Piece of paper (ideally thick/with cardboard as a base) -Coloring supplies -Scissors (or pre cut-out pictures prior to class) -Glue The following options for materials are flexible, but if you have any of the following, it would be really fun to add to your sign! -Images from magazines or newspapers of environment/nature/animals -Recycled materials for decorating (e.g. bottle caps, pasta shells, the world is your oyster! pun intended :)) -Recycled materials for sign base (a cut out from old cardboard box works well!)
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
As a women's and gender studies scholar, I make a concerted effort to incorporate social justice theory in an approachable way. One way I do this is by including a diverse group of historical figures to celebrate. I encourage curiosity and difficult questions. Students of all gender orientations are welcome.
Curriculum will be presented on Canva, include trivia questions, and pulled from various sources including: -The Wilderness Society -National Geographic -Goodnight Stories for Rebel Girls (not read from directly, just for research purpose)
