In this class, we will take a close at famous Disney villains and use sociology and criminology to see what put them on their evil path. Each class will look at one villain. We will take a look at multiple sources if available such as different origins or authors, and also the difference in the villain in different contexts such as movies versus literature. No purchases will be needed for this classes, and information needed will be provided through handouts . While this is labeled '2', this class can be taken in any order that you wish! The lesson will consist of slides, a lecture and open questions sessions where students can ask questions and express thoughts on each subject or character. Week 1: Hades of Hercules - God of the Underworld, Hades, will be the focus of this lesson. We will look back at Greek Mythology and learn where his hatred comes from. Week 2: Scar of the Lion King - The cruel uncle, willing to kill to get the throne. We will look at the Disney movie as well as Hamlet. Week 3: Shan Yu of Mulan - This class will take a look at the real historical figures and how they relate to the dark story of the Huns. Week 4: Governor Ratcliffe of Pocahontas- The man who started the 'drums of war' in Pocahontas has an interesting life both on the screen and in real life. Let us explore the differences. Week 5: Claude Frollo of The Hunchback of Notre Dame - A man whose life is filled with both corruption and religion. With a look at the original tale by Victor Hugo to his Disney debut, we will look at all the influences in his life. Week 6: Dr. Facilier of Princess and the Frog - Into the world of New Orleans, we will take a look at the Shadow man, Dr. Facilier. If you would like a single class on any of these villains, or your favorite villain, please let me know and I will create a class just for you.

Teacher expertise and credentials
Hello! I am a graduate of Mississippi State University with my Bachelors Degree in Criminology and Sociology. I completed my undergraduate studies in just 3 years and graduated in the top 1% of my college.
I am currently an ESL (English as a Second Language) educator for children between the ages of 3 and 14. I enjoy educating children in English, and I also enjoy sparking an interest in Criminology and Sociology. I love the conversations and ideas that can come from nearly any aspect of Sociology, and I love hearing children's thoughts on each subject.
My approach to learning is to allow students to think about each subject and express those thoughts. If a child can think independently on a topic, he or she has learned far more than if they were only lectures. It is better to talk with a student than talk to them.
In my personal life, I am married. My husband and I have three rescue cats and one rescue dog. I enjoy reading fiction and nonfiction books, reading comics, playing video games and cooking.
