Descriptive Writing: Showing Instead of Telling
In this class, learners will analyze examples of telling sentences versus showing sentences. They will practice writing their own showing sentences and get feedback. They will then have the option of sharing with the whole group.
Class experience
US Grade 6 - 8
Students do not need any special materials for this class. They just need to be able to type or write out their sentences. This class includes lots of teacher feedback and student interaction. Shy students don’t have to share with the whole group if they do not want to. We will introduce ourselves first. Then we will begin looking over example sentences. Which sentences are boring? Which sentences are interesting? Why? Which techniques are being used in the interesting sentences?...
Students will improve their own descriptive writing by discussing example sentences and then practicing their own sentences. They will get teacher feedback on their sentences.
I have a bachelor's degree in English, current teaching certifications in two US states, and 18 years of experience teaching English in the classroom.
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
