Learning multiplication facts is essential to math success beginning in grade 3. Yet many students struggle to learn them even into Middle School. Rather than thinking of them as random facts to memorize, I show the patterns and logic that make them make sense. In addition, I introduce activities, songs, and games that help students attain automaticity, the ability to recall the facts without going through complicated work-arounds. In this interactive class, I present a slideshow with graphics clearly illustrating what multiplication is and patterns that make learning the facts easy. As we go through them, students fill in a multiplication table with me in an order that shows the underlying structure of the facts. This is broken up with songs and group activities to make memorizing more playful and enjoyable. This is a version of the class designed for 7-9 years olds called "Multiplication Mania" retooled to engage older students.
Learning Goals
Students will gain an understanding of the logic of the multiplication table. Students will then have a foundation upon which to begin memorizing the multiplication facts for 1-10 to automaticity.

Teacher expertise and credentials
I love teaching elementary school students to enjoy math, reading, and writing. I also am passionate about maps, Greek Mythology, and looking at art.
A teacher with 25 years of public-school classroom experience, I came to teaching with prior formative experiences in theater, dance, and art. I studied art history at Columbia University where I received a Ph.D. in 1992. I worked as an art historian teaching at the college level and was a writer for the Departments of Sculpture and Manuscripts at the Getty Center Museum in Los Angeles, CA when it first opened. I still am very involved in art, theater, and dance, and feel that they inform all I do.
My learning philosophy is based on two observations I have made over the course of my teaching career.
1. Learning is active. We build knowledge on a foundation of experiences and prior learnings, which is different for each of us. Learners must actively engage with the material to incorporate it into their own knowledge systems. This includes activities we traditionally associate with learning such as listening, explaining, questioning, responding, reading, and writing. It also includes creating, playing, drawing, dramatizing, and moving.
2. Learning is social. Especially in this time of online learning and isolation from our wider communities, we all crave social interaction! Being with others increases engagement. I truly believe that our ideas and skills are built by hearing others, responding to them, and having them hear and respond to us.
I look forward to working with your child!
