This is an age appropriate lesson in forensic science. Students will learn about forensic scientists' role in investigating crime scenes. While learning about CSI techniques, we will simultaneously put our skills to the test to solve "The Case of the Missing Donuts". The format of the class will be interactive, as I introduce a new technique, demonstrate, and allow children time to practice that technique. We will then come together to solve the next piece of the case of the missing donuts. Children will be encouraged to share their thoughts and discuss! A detective's notepad is recommended. Class 1: We will learn about gathering evidence, and fingerprinting. We will practice taking fingerprints with carbon printing, and identify the 3 common patterns. Class 2: We will learn about how scientists chromatography to separate substances. We will practice identifying pigments in ink, using chromatography. Class 3: We will learn about decoding secret messages and make a message decoder. We will also discuss and analyze DNA testing.

Teacher expertise and credentials
On Outschool I teach a variety of classes, though science and nature are my passion. I teach science to 1st-4th graders at a school in Pittsburgh. Before this, I taught 3rd and 4th grade reading, writing, math, and social studies for 8 years. I like to guide students explore and form their own understandings. My job is clear up any misconceptions, and extend their thinking while making it FUN! Outside of teaching I love to be outdoors, running, hiking, swimming and playing with my dog, Ella (you might see her in some of my classes)!
