Class Experience

In this class, students will learn to unleash their creative potential as well as learn the different forms of Creative Writing. Since this is an ongoing weekly course, students will learn something different in each class. Students can benefit from one or may choose to take several. It's entirely up to you!

The first 10 minutes of class will be a lecture and example of current assignment. The next 30-35 minutes will be writing time, working together to ensure good progress, and some editing to ensure they understood all aspects of the writing style for that day. We will designate the last 10 minutes of class to share each others work (if they want to and feel comfortable). I will provide specific feedback through Outschool if they wish to send it to me through messages rather than read aloud in class.

Every week students will be shown examples and given a list of topics to choose from for the topic of that week. I give students a variety of options to write about, so they don't feel lost or confused when writing. I want my learners to come up with their own ideas, however I also don't want them spend too much time brainstorming since it cuts into their writing time. I actively asses learner progress as well during writing time to ensure that they are staying on track.

Here is the weekly schedule and the list of things we will write:

8/13/22 Week 1: Poetry
Students will learn about the several different types of poems, and they will choose one to write themselves in a style of their choice. We will discuss the importance of word choice, structure, and line in poetry. We will talk about haiku, sonnet, limerick, and free-verse!

8/20/22 Week 2: Fiction- Short Story
This class will teach students how to write a fictional story of the genre of their choosing. They will learn about important elements of fiction such as plot, character, setting, point of view, genre, and theme.

8/27/22 Week 3: Letters
Students will write a letter to whomever they please such as a friend, family member, superhero, famous person, fictional character, or even an animal! They will learn how to properly address and structure a professional yet fun and creative letter.

9/3/22 Week 4: Memoirs
Students will be asked to write a short memoir about a turning point or special moment in their life. They will learn about non-fiction writing and writing in the past tense.

9/10/22 Week 5: Comic Strip
Write your very own comic strip and draw your own scenes! They will learn how to use onomatopoeia and tell a story through images.

9/17/22 Week 6: Playwright
Learn how to write dialogue, narration, scene descriptions, and characters by writing your very own play. They will learn the importance of dialogue and scene.

Learning Goals

Students will learn how to express themselves creatively through multiple writing styles.

Teacher expertise and credentials
Bachelor's Degree in English from The University of North Texas
Hi! I'm Roxanna, and I graduated with Bachelor of Arts in Integrative Studies with concentrations in English, Biology, and French from The University of North Texas. It may appear to be an odd combination, but it provided me with expertise in a variety of subjects. I also have a minor in Social Studies, specializing in Native American History.

Currently, I am a graduate student pursuing a Master of Arts in English - Creative Writing. When I'm not writing or studying, I'm reading short stories, novels, and comic books, or spending time with my doggos and playing my Nintendo switch.

My background has allowed me to teach and mentor students in a variety of subjects and topics such as creative writing, reading comprehension, Native American history, and Ecology.

I am usually available for tutoring from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. CST on weekdays and 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. on weekends. So please message me if you don't see a time that works for you on the class schedule. Please contact me for any reason, and I will always do my best to respond within 24 hours or less.

I look forward to hearing from you and educating your learner(s)!
