1-2 hours per week. Student will write and clean up a query letter between the first class and second.Class Experience
US Grade 9 - 12
Students should have either a completed short story, novella, or novel that they want to submit, or the first couple of chapters and an outline. The purpose of this class is to write a query letter to an editor or agent to seek publication or representation. A query letter is a way to introduce yourself to an agent or an editor. You are selling yourself as well as the story you have written. The goal of the query letter is to have the agent/editor asking and wanting to know more. Day One - We will go over how to find agents/editors to submit to, how to format a query letter, what to include in your query letter, how to write the super important short summary of your story, and the difference in query letters for email query letters vs. paper query letters. Day Two - We will workshop the letters the students have written to polish them up and prepare them to be sent out to the editors and agents the students have selected. If we have time, we will go over how to keep track of submissions, following up on queries, and how to send additional material when requested.
Learning Goals
