Class Experience

US Grade 6 - 8
Welcome to Vermicomposting 101! In this 55 minute long class we will dive into the worm of worms! Join me in my worm bin (well next to my worm bin) while we venture through all that goes into the lifecycle of worm castings. What are worm castings you ask? What are the different types of worms that are used to compost? What are worm castings? Do worms drown in puddles? Do they have brains? Why are worm castings so beneficial for the garden? Do they multiply in the bin, and if so why is proper bin management important? When I cut a worm in half does its body regenerate? How do you vermacompost in winter? We will learn the answer to this and SO many more questions. I will walk all students through how I make my bins, what commercial bin I use, and how they can make one for cheap!

This is an entirely for fun, non-graded, no assignment necessary class. I will provide all visuals and no other materials or websites are needed for your student to access. See you in the classroom!
Learning Goals
Students will understand the basic housing, feeding and moisture requirements for their worm bin, as well as an appropriate location for the project. Students will learn how to be able to make compost for their gardens (or to make for others). Students will also be able to troubleshoot their worm bin and take steps to ensure a high survival rate (or maybe even double their worm population) and happy healthy worms!

Some of the classes I hope to share with Outschool pertain to gardening, agriculture, canning, and sociology. I graduated with a B.A in Sociology and pursuing my MEd in Elementary Education. I am a public/homeschool mom of three. I enjoy reading and gardening in my spare time, as well as trying to find frugal ways to feed and entertain my kiddos!
I look forward to seeing you in class!
