US Grade 10 - 12
Are you getting ready for college and scholarship applications? You will need a dynamite personal statement! Most applications require this important essay. You can bring a prompt from a current college or scholarship application or you can use the class provided prompt that can be adapted for nearly any application. Each class focuses on one important aspect of the essay. Drop into just one class or take the whole series. You can get feedback each week that you attend. You can take it multiple times to work on different application essays as well! This class is also great for English language learners or international students applying to schools in the US. Every week we will be introduced to the topic of the week, see an example in writing, and have some time to work on our own writing. Here are the topics that will be covered: Telling Your Story - In this lesson we will get to know our audience and their motivations. We will brainstorm for our stories with our audience in mind. (July 1st, September 4th, October 2nd, October 30th) Showing and Telling - This week we will learn how to select our details that make our stories impactful. (July 8th, September 11th, October 9th, November 6th) Rhetorical Modes - There are 3 distinct rhetorical modes in the personal statement. Do you know what they are? Find out what they are and how to use them effectively this week! (July 15th, September 18th, October 16th, and November 13th) Developing Your Voice - We want to proofread our essays but retain our unique voices. Let's do that together during this highly interactive class where I will help you proofread your essays without making them boring! (July 22nd, September 15th, October 23rd, November 20th)
Learning Goals
Students will select topics for their personal statements, understand and target their essays for their audiences, learn the three rhetorical modes of personal statement writing, develop compelling stories in their essays, and develop their unique voices.
