Class Experience

This eight week class will be a continuation of Class Guitar for Beginners, Level 9. Student progress will differ according to the amount of practice, prior musical knowledge, ect…Students will review what we learned in Classes 1-9 and then continuing to learn how to read music, play melodies, and play chords in the keys of C, A minor, G, D, A, and E. Through reading guitar sheet music and playing the guitar, students gain musical knowledge that is beneficial for learning other instruments as well as listening to music with an enhanced understanding.

Music lessons improve academic skills, patience, and discipline.

Students will learn though the practice of weekly exercises and songs that I will provide as a pdf file.

The prerequisite for this class is Class Guitar for Beginner’s, Levels 1-7.

In Class Guitar for Beginners, Level 10, we will practice performing melodies and chords at the same time, review the keys of C, A minor, G, D, and A, practice reading tablature, and learn how to recognize arpeggios on the guitar.

Lessons will be taught over Zoom live video conference with much repetition of exercises and songs that we will play as a class. Please allow room in your home setup so that I may be able to see your left and right hand while you are playing guitar.

Depending on class progress the schedule will include:

Schedule:

Week 1: "Malaguena" Chords in the Key of E.

Week 2: “You Are My Sunshine" Key of G.

Week 3: “You Are My Sunshine" Key of G.

Week 4: "Estudio' Key of A minor.

    Teaching Philosophy:

People often say that one needs to be talented in order to succeed in certain fields, and although I do believe talent is a factor, throughout my teaching career it has been my goal that no matter how much talent or how little talent a student possesses my job is to aide in improving their skills. Learning is a journey that involves a desire to participate, hard work, and encouraging teachers.

At Spring Hill College in Mobile, AL, I taught guitar, jazz appreciation and world music appreciation. The most enjoyable part about teaching at Spring Hill was sharing with students how music and culture are inseparable. Certainty students with previous musical training were excited to learn about scales, chord structures, and the many other aspects of music theory, but what delighted both music majors and non-music majors was how a gas shortage affected jazz in the late 1930s and the early 1940s or how a culture’s natural resources and philosophies aid in the development of their musical instruments and musical composition. Recent years are a perfect example of how the economy and technology continue to affect music. It is my belief and teaching practice that music does not exist in a vacuum.

My instructor positions at Temple School of Music, Johnson Ferry Conservatory for the Performing Arts, Spring Hill College, and the Alabama School of Mathematics and Science have prepared me for instruction with a diverse student population. Teaching such a diverse population has convinced me to center my lesson plans on student needs such as creating lessons that include demonstrations and examples for auditory, visual, interpersonal, intrapersonal and even kinesthetic and logical personalities. In a class with thirty or forty students or in a class with one student, the instructor must continually search for the most efficient teaching techniques.

Teaching writing at the Writing Center at Kennesaw State University, ESL online with VIPKID, and grading tests online for the Educational Testing Service has instilled in me a new perspective of how spoken language and music evolve from each other. These three experiences has also given me a new understanding of assessing a students knowledge, helping them improve their communication skills, and how technology can enhance and improve learning.

    Something Fun and Personal:

In order to supplement my teaching income, I have had a plethora of jobs over the years and have grown to notice and believe that no matter how minimal a task may feel always do your best. As I question successful people and read biographies about them, one of the common factors I find is that most successful people do their best no matter what they are doing. This has led me to become interested in leadership development especially as it relates to millennials.
A few months ago I bought a set of throwing knives and have since enjoyed learning about the art of throwing knives.
