There is a special "Root Word Dictionary" for each class and a variety of supplemental printed materials suitable for all levels, including middle and high school students who would like to increase their vocabulary. Roots are roots, and age doesn't matter! Consider learning this valuable skill. [I continue to apply my understanding of root words in my daily life!] Kahoot and Blooket game links are included at the end of each slide lesson for extended learning and practice. Play as often as you like! >>> Learn how to figure out the general meaning of an unfamiliar word without ever having studied it! <<< THIS IS A FLEX CLASS and does not meet live. It is designed for learners to work at their own pace. Repetition is a key factor in retaining knowledge, and our regular sessions ensure that students remember what they've learned. (It's like flexing your mental muscles to enhance your word detective skills!) CUT AND PASTE: https://outschool.com/classes/build-vocabulary-learning-greek-latin-root-words-ongoing-2-days-per-week-qzHhQRO3 *** Become a "word detective" in this class and experience the Vocabulary Ripple Effect! *** As you learn 10 roots per week, witness the chain reaction of unlocking the meanings of endless words, and watch your vocabulary grow rapidly right before your eyes. By becoming a word detective, you'll also enhance your ability to read and pronounce unfamiliar words with confidence! When students learn 10 new root words per week, they have the potential to learn a substantial number of vocabulary words. This is because many words share common roots. On average, knowing one root word can help unlock the meanings of several related words. While the exact number can vary depending on the roots and how they are used, students can potentially learn dozens or even hundreds of new vocabulary words over time by mastering these 10 root words each week. In essence, it's like discovering the keys to a treasure trove of linguistic knowledge. ***** Why take THIS class? ***** #1 You'll look forward to class because it's FUN and INTERACTIVE! In this dynamic class, students actively engage in the learning process. They'll interact with the root words throughout the entire time (even on mute) by participating in activities that reinforce their understanding. Also included are additional practice resources to support ongoing learning beyond the class. #2 Your confidence will grow! As students become more adept at understanding words through their roots, their confidence in their language skills naturally flourishes. This newfound self-assuredness doesn't just enhance their vocabulary comprehension but also empowers them to pronounce words more fluently and confidently, leading to an overall improved academic experience. #3 You'll learn a LIFE-LONG SKILL! Students will learn how to determine the meanings of unfamiliar words even if they've never encountered them before. The ability to decode and analyze unfamiliar words is a skill that can benefit students throughout their lives, in both academic and professional settings. [I continue to apply my understanding of root words in my daily life!] #4 You'll see an improvement in your grades! When a teacher introduces a new concept and vocabulary, having a solid understanding of root words provides a distinct advantage. This advantage extends well beyond English classes. Students equipped with this knowledge will discover it significantly easier to excel in various subjects like biology, chemistry, and history, where specialized vocabulary is frequently employed. #5 You'll have a test prep advantage! Many standardized tests, like the SAT and ACT, include vocabulary sections that assess a student's ability to discern word meanings. #6 You'll DISCOVER "cool" stuff! Lessons are sprinkled with "tidbits" of Fun Facts related to the root words of the week. #7 You'll have some choices for practice AND you get the ANSWER KEYS! Choose from a range of handouts specifically designed for each week to practice and reinforce the weekly root words. These resources include flashcards, activities that practice “DETECTING” the root in unfamiliar words, and using “CLUES” to figure out what they mean. ANSWER KEYS - I encourage students to view the answer keys to ensure they are on track with the directions and to verify their final work. Also included: Links to Weekly KAHOOT games! #8 You can work when you want! This class is ideal for homeschoolers, after-schoolers, or hybrid learners. Work at your own pace. You can speed up or slow down as needed, making learning adaptable to your schedule and preferences. #9 You've got a teacher available around the clock! This class is designed with you in mind, and if you ever have questions or need assistance, I'm just an email away to support your learning journey. As a FLEX class, we do not meet live. However, there are weekly opportunities for interaction with me for questions, support, or grading, tailored to your individual learning style and participation level. Upon request, I am always available to meet "live" in the classroom. #10 YOU MAY ENROLL ANY DAY of the week - regardless of the "start" date. I'll accommodate your schedule. # 11 You’ll BUILD VOCABULARY with minimal effort. Yes, learning root words can significantly boost vocabulary with relatively little effort. Understanding root words and their meanings makes vocabulary expansion more efficient and less demanding. ____ After you sign up for this FLEX class... (You can always use blank paper, but the mini-flashcards make things easier!) *Scroll back to the first page and click on the link to view the Google slide lesson. Grab a pencil and you’re ready to begin your first lesson! "See", "Say" and "Write" the meaning of the root word on the mini-flashcard page. Next, you'll see DETECTIVE work, where you'll be guided to figure out the meaning of words - some you may be familiar with, some, maybe not! Finally, review what you learned by "playing" a Jeopardy game. Stop at Day 2. (Or keep going - isn't it cool? It's up to you!) *After the lesson, return to the LIST #1 attachment and choose the practice pages to print. Learning Goals
When a student can break down a word and identify the meaning of the word parts, it is possible to determine the general meaning of the unfamiliar word without ever having studied it.
Learning Greek and Latin root words helps students quickly decipher the meaning of unfamiliar words and is an effective strategy for word comprehension and vocabulary building.
Since the English language is dominated by Greek and Latin roots, learning the meaning of these word parts will help students better understand unfamiliar words. Math and Science terminology are particularly full of Greek and Latin roots and suffixes.
For example, if a student comes across the word “monochromatic” and does not know the meaning, they would break the word into parts and identify what each means. In this class, students will learn that the prefix “mono-“ means one or singular and “chroma-“ like in the word chrome, indicates color. Therefore, students could determine that the meaning or definition of monochromatic has something to do with "one color."
Standard: Demonstrate an understanding of Greek and Latin roots and prefixes to analyze the meanings of complex words, thereby enhancing vocabulary comprehension across various academic subjects.
-- Learning root words helps students in multiple ways --
*Vocabulary: Root words build vocabulary by revealing word meanings.
*Decoding: Understanding roots aids in breaking down complex words, boosting reading skills.
*Subject Mastery: It aids in grasping specialized terms across subjects.
*Spelling and Writing: Root words aid spelling and effective writing.
*Academic Success: Strong vocabulary and reading skills enhance overall academic performance.
*Critical Thinking: Analyzing roots sharpens critical and analytical skills.
AND...
*Independent Learning: Students become confident, independent learners.
This is a FLEX CLASS and DOES NOT MEET LIVE. However, I am always available for help and will meet "live" to support students get started when requested.
The intent of the class is to be fun - as we learn best when we are having fun. A "good mood" enhances attention and retention. (A negative mood does the opposite.)
*** YOU MAY ENROLL ANY DAY of the week - regardless of the "start" date. I'll accommodate your schedule. **
