A NOTE FROM MS. GANLEY: The Google Slide lessons are simple, with images to quickly teach the meaning of the root words. There is a special "Root Word Dictionary" for each class and a variety of supplemental printed materials suitable for all levels, including middle and high school students who would like to increase their vocabulary. Roots are roots, and age doesn't matter! Consider learning this valuable skill. [I continue to apply my understanding of root words in my daily life!]...
When a student can break down a word and identify the meaning of the word parts, it is possible to determine the general meaning of the unfamiliar word without ever having studied it. Learning Greek and Latin root words helps students quickly decipher the meaning of unfamiliar words and is an effective strategy for word comprehension and vocabulary building. Since the English language is dominated by Greek and Latin roots, learning the meaning of these word parts will help students better understand unfamiliar words. Math and Science terminology are particularly full of Greek and Latin roots and suffixes. For example, if a student comes across the word “monochromatic” and does not know the meaning, they would break the word into parts and identify what each means. In this class, students will learn that the prefix “mono-“ means one or singular and “chroma-“ like in the word chrome, indicates color. Therefore, students could determine that the meaning or definition of monochromatic has something to do with "one color." Standard: Demonstrate an understanding of Greek and Latin roots and prefixes to analyze the meanings of complex words, thereby enhancing vocabulary comprehension across various academic subjects. -- Learning root words helps students in multiple ways -- *Vocabulary: Root words build vocabulary by revealing word meanings. *Decoding: Understanding roots aids in breaking down complex words, boosting reading skills. *Subject Mastery: It aids in grasping specialized terms across subjects. *Spelling and Writing: Root words aid spelling and effective writing. *Academic Success: Strong vocabulary and reading skills enhance overall academic performance. *Critical Thinking: Analyzing roots sharpens critical and analytical skills.
