Beginning Piano Lessons (With Support for Ear Training)
I will work with your learner weekly to play the piano with additional support for learners who like to play by ear or who find reading music difficult to master.
Class experience
Beginner Level
I will teach your learner how to play the piano, starting with the basics. If your learner is brand new to the piano, these are the first few lessons we will start with. If your learner is more advanced, we may move forward to additional lessons, and I will discuss that with you. Lesson 1: Hand Position and Piano Posture - In this lesson we will work on how to sit at the piano, how to position our hands on the keys, and we will learn C position. Students will practice using the right hand...
Students will learn how to locate middle C on the keyboard and on the treble and bass clef staves. Students will learn how to hold their hands when playing the piano keyboard. Students will learn how to sit while at the piano. Students will learn how to play their right hand C 5-finger scale independently with Right hand and left hand. Students will learn how to play the C 5-finger scale with both hands in parallel motion and contrary motion. Students will learn to identify intervals of steps (2nds) and skips (3rds) to aid in reading music.
I have twenty years of experience teaching piano from beginner to intermediate. I also have a Bachelor's degree in music and a Master's degree in Elementary Education, giving me a unique insight in how to help learners struggling with reading music to thrive.
Homework Offered
The learner will be expected to practice their pieces at least five days per week. This does not need to be much longer than ten or fifteen minutes per practice session, provided the learner practices all of the pieces they are working on. The practiced pieces will be evaluated during the lesson for correctness, and we will either move onto a new piece or continue working on the same piece depending on the skill shown by the learner.0 - 1 hours per week outside of class
Assessments Offered
The assessments will be done as performance evaluations during the lesson each week to monitor technical skill and improvement.Grades Offered
Certificates of completion will be sent to your learners when they complete a book in their preferred piano lesson curriculum.
With my elementary reading instruction background, I provide additional support to students who require a more tactile approach to learning how to read music.
We will work together to identify the right piano curriculum for your learner. If they have taken lessons before, we will likely work with the curriculum they are already familiar with. If they have not taken lessons before, I will likely suggest that we start with the Alfred or Faber lesson series. Books in both series are typically less than $10 and will last through several months of lessons.
I have worked with the Alfred piano library, the Suzuki method, the Bastien piano method, the Hal Leonard Student Piano library, and the Faber Piano Adventures series.
For over fifteen years, I've taught and tutored reading and writing alongside piano and voice lessons. I have a Bachelor's in Music and a Master's in Education. I've worked hard to create individualized lessons for students, incorporating...
