Class Experience

This on-going class is an introduction to piano lessons for young beginners. I will introduce the basics at the start of every class, then we will learn one new song.

Students will...
* learn to identify groups of 2 and 3 black keys on the keyboard.
* recognize various kinds of pattern sequences.
* imitate rhythm patterns.
* recognize high and low sounds on the keyboard.
* memorize an easy song every week.

As a teacher with over twenty years of experience, I have been running my own piano studio full-time for the last decade. I started learning music in piano lessons when I was four years old and am currently teaching my 15th academic year as a piano teacher. I also am a former public school art teacher, university adjunct professor, swim instructor, dance teacher, and math tutor.

Regular practice is an integral part of learning to play an instrument. Students will receive weekly homework based on the classwork, to be completed on a near-daily basis. For the young learners in this class, a practice of 5 to 10 minutes daily with lots of parental help is recommended.

Each learner should have access to a piano or music keyboard. For this class, there will be no printed materials as all songs will be memorized and learned via video. Supplemental videos and recorded duets will be provided.

25 minutes per week in class, and an estimated 0 - 1 hours per week outside of class.

Parents must stay off camera as much as possible but will need to assist as necessary during class time to help their young learner find the correct keys, clap along to the rhythm, and control the mute button in Zoom. Parents will also be expected to assist with at home practice throughout the week.

Absolutely NO EATING during class. Learners will need the constant use of both of their hands as well as to engage with their full attention. Learners who are eating on camera may be asked to leave.

Most songs adapted from the Piano Safari Repertoire Book 1.
Up and Up and Up, Hands in the Mirror, and Dante are adapted from Supersonics Piano Rote Collection.
