This ASL conversation class will meet on a regular weekly basis for a ten-week period of time with the common goal to practice conversational signing.

Class experience

This class is taught in American Sign Language.
This course has been developed as a way to give intermediate and advanced level signers (learners who have made it through beginning, intermediate levels of signing) a place to continue practicing ASL. Being able to sign and interact with others in a completely voice-off situation best mimics the experience they will have out in the world signing with Deaf members of their community. You don't need to search for a language partner any longer! This is a great way to meet other learners of ASL.
I grew up with a Deaf family member. I learned the basics of American Sign Language at a very young age and found it incredibly helpful as I moved through childhood and into adulthood. I could communicate with other children who were clearly frustrated that no one either could or was willing to take the time and make the effort to interact with them. As an adult, I studied American Sign Language in college so that I could better communicate with the many deaf and hearing impaired members of my community.
Homework Offered
There will be no assigned homework for this class, but I suggest students look at the classroom post for each upcoming discussion topic (which I will send out early in the week for students to look over) and consider what they might like to bring into their signed conversation concerning that subject.
Assessments Offered
Learners and parents will be provided with an assessment upon request. Students and parents can also request a certificate of completion once the course has finished.
Grades Offered
Handouts may be provided (via classroom post) for students throughout the duration of the course.
It is possible that there may be discussions concerning signing about gender identification, pronouns, etc. in class. I will not go out of my way to teach specific lessons on these topics, but if a learner asks how to sign about these topics, I will answer those questions. Please be aware of that.
