American Sign Language: Basic Level

Welcome to American Sign Language: Basic Level .

This class will be a 30-minute introductory class on American Sign Language (ASL). Students do not need to know ASL prior to attending this class. The class is designed for students ages 7 to 9.

Students will learn:
*The Alphabet
*Numbers 1-20
*Signs associated with meeting new people (Example: What is your name?)
*Sign phrases (Examples: I like...I have...I want...etc.)
*Family signs (Examples: Mom, Dad, Uncle, Sister, etc.)
*Colors
*Other basic signs such as animal signs (if time permits, we will watch a video at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=urGIbCsCgNg&t=194s )

Students will be taught the different signs directly by teacher model. They will be given a chance to practice with spelling words with a game and introduce themselves to a classmate via share screen. ASL classes are usually taught as a voice-off where the teacher only uses ASL to communicate and teach the students. In my class, I will be speaking as I teach the individual signs and phrases. The class will be flexible where students can ask and answer questions as we learn each sign.
