For animals in the wild, a good defense is the key to survival. Some animals use common defenses like camouflage to hide from predators or speed to make a quick escape. Physical features like horns, claws or a mouthful of sharp teeth can come in handy when fending off a predator's attack. Other animals have developed some unique, strange and even disgusting methods of defense to help them survive in the wild. Why is the hairy frog nicknamed the "wolverine frog"? How is a mantis shrimp able to fend off an octopus? What disgusting defense does a fulmar chick use to survive? Through an engaging presentation including photos and video clips and group discussion, learners will be introduced to some animals with unique defenses. After class students will receive an optional fun Animal Defense Word Scramble printable.
