Class Experience

US Grade 3 - 6
SUMMER CAMP NOTE: Want a condensed 5 days per week for two weeks summer camp schedule? Check out zoology summer camp here https://outschool.com/classes/zoology-summer-camp-intensive-curriculum-ULc5VFw8

Students will learn a comprehensive zoology curriculum in this twelve week, full semester course. My lessons are full of discussion, visual examples, and include short games and challenges. This class is far more than just a lecture. Students receive hands-on learning opportunities including learning how to monitor animal populations and model structural adaptations.

Supplemental activities and information may be posted to the class page following the lesson to help students further investigate the topic of the week. I provide many tactile learning activities to reinforce vocabulary and understanding (matching, sorting, cut & paste, and other activities).

Activities and additional information added to the classroom outside of class hours are completely optional but will help students build a well-rounded full-curriculum experience with this class. I look forward to working with your family!

The schedule for weekly lessons is as follows:
week 1: biotic vs. abiotic and characteristics of life
week 2: organization of living things
week 3: food chains and food webs
week 4: symbiotic relationships
week 5: batesian mimicry, aposematic coloration, and cryptic coloration
week 6: physiological adaptations
week 7: structural adaptations
week 8: behavioral adaptations
week 9: animal intelligence
week 10: speciation
week 11: life history strategies
week 12: recently extinct species

If you feel your child would do better in a small group setting with a workbook to follow along with, my small group zoology class covers a different animal each week and utilizes a Thinking Tree funschooling journal which provides fabulous structure for children with alternative learning needs. Learning Goals

Profile
Teacher expertise and credentials
Virginia Teaching Certificate in Science
Before I became a teacher I worked with wildlife, in a microbiology lab, and also in animal welfare. I have always been called to work with children and have volunteered at girl scout camps, zoo camps, and children's hospitals. As a teacher on Outschool, I am committed to bringing visual and tangible content to the classroom. I believe teaching is more than just a lecture. My students learn best by seeing examples of concepts, and by breaking new content down into manageable pieces. I am always available for questions and support!
