Each week will focus on two different chapters of the book. We will cover various reading comprehension skills and writing skills that align with CCSS. Students will be able to cite several pieces of evidence from the text in support of their analysis and inferences made from the text. (RL7.1) Students will be able to determine the theme of the text and analyze how it develops throughout the course of the text. (RL7.2) Students will be able to provide an accurate and objective summary of the text. (RL 7.2) Students will be able to determine the meaning of words and phrases used in the story, including figurative language. (RL 7.4) Students will be able to compare and contrast how the author uses the two different character’s points of views in the text. (RL 7.6) Students will be able to provide clear and coherent writing in which the development, organization and style are appropriate for the given tasks. Homework Offered
Homework will be offered each week as a type of written response to the reading that was done together in class. Teacher will check the homework each week when it is turned in and give feedback to the student through the Google Classroom Platform. Completing the homework will benefit the student for in class discussion, activities and complete comprehension of the story.0 - 1 hours per week outside of class
Assessments Offered
A quiz will be given via Google Classroom (at home activity) midway through the book. The final project will also serve as an assessment activity. They are a required part of the course to fulfil completion. However, no grades will be given, just feedback.Grades Offered
While quizzes, and assignments may contain a 'points total', grades will not be an integral part of the class. No final class grade will be given as well. All assignments will be given feedback to benefit the student.

The novel does mention instances of war and killing. It discusses moments where the main characters family members have been killed. The non-fiction part of the story takes place during the height of the civil war in Southern Sudan.
