Film & Broadcasting Education is a 20-week course for students ages 12 to 17, taught by veteran broadcaster, author, and filmmaker, Steven Heumann.

Class experience

Our goal is to help students feel confident telling stories in a visual medium. they will gain skills in producing, directing, and general visual storytelling. By the end of the course they will feel comfortable producing a short film from concept to final edit.
Mr. Heumann has worked in the television and film industry for almost 20 years as Senior Producer of the long-running program At Your Leisure, along with The Geek Report, County Seat, G3EK, and others. He has written and directed dozens of short films as well as full-length features, and has published six sci-fi thriller novels and numerous short stories. Over his career he has produced over a thousand hours of television content, filming, editing, writing, and producing as needed. He has also appeared regularly on-camera as reporter and host, so he is able to teach aspects from both sides of production. His current work as a full-time novelist has allowed him to branch out even further, developing relationships with creators that will allow an even broader depth to this year's Film & Broadcasting Course.
A cell phone to film assignments as the class progresses. Free editing software of the student's choice (examples will be provided).
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
None.
We will watch a prerecorded video each week during class that will lay out the skill for that course and then discuss the assignment, answer student questions, and go deeper into the subject if needed. Each video is taught by the instructor and includes film examples of each aspect of production to help students gain a better understanding of the principles involved.
