Class Experience

US Grade 5
This course will not disappoint your learner!! We are going to have a blast learning about science! This course is quarter 2 of 4 quarters that encompass 5th grade science. Learners can take this course to meet their 5th grade science standards and/or use it as a supplement to their current 5th grade comprehensive science curriculum. *COURSES CAN BE TAKEN IN ANY ORDER

There will be one lesson each week and the lessons will include presentations, videos, handouts, doodle notes, hands-on learning activities and labs/experiments! I explain, teach and model all activities each week in the recording. The activities will appeal to all learner styles! Labs are not required but participating in the labs is encouraged and learners will have a blast! It is crucial to foster a love for science in learners so they want to continue developing their science skills for middle school and high school. Science matters and your learner will begin to enjoy science with this course!

Syllabus

8 Lessons
over 8 Weeks
Lesson 1:
Meeting 1: States of Matter & Changes in States of Matter
We will delve into the states of matter and their transformations. We explore the properties of solids, liquids, and gases, as well as the factors influencing changes between these states as we enjoy making ice cream in a bag! Understanding these fundamental concepts lays the groundwork for comprehending physical processes, phase transitions, and the behavior of matter.
Lesson 2:
Meeting 2: Mixtures & Solutions
We'll be diving into the world of mixtures and solutions! We'll learn about different types of mixtures and what makes them unique. We'll also explore how solutions are made and what factors can change them. Get ready for some exciting experiments and discoveries about how things mix together!
Lesson 3:
Q2 Meeting 3: What Affects the Speed of Dissolving? (Sugar Cube Lab)
We'll investigate what affects the speed of dissolving substances. We'll conduct a fun Sugar Cube Lab to observe how factors like temperature, stirring, and surface area impact the rate at which sugar dissolves in water. Through hands-on experimentation, we'll uncover the science behind dissolving and learn about important concepts like solubility and saturation. Get ready to become expert scientists in understanding how substances dissolve!
Lesson 4:
Meeting 4: Atomic Theory & Structure of an Atom
Let's explore the fascinating world of atoms!. We'll learn about the building blocks of matter, subatomic particles like protons, neutrons, and electrons, and how they come together to form atoms. Through interactive activities and models, we'll unravel the mysteries of atomic structure and gain a deeper understanding of the fundamental units that make up everything around us. Get ready for an atomic adventure!

Florida Teaching Certificate in Elementary Education
I am a certified teacher and I've been teaching middle school comprehensive science since 2014 and I taught 5th-grade science many years prior to moving to middle school. I currently help design activities that support the 7th & 8th-grade curriculum for all of the science teachers and serve as a math and science instructional coach to K-5 elementary teachers. I will be incorporating reading and writing in this science course as well. I have a master's degree in reading and writing, and I am a firm believer in reading and writing in the content area.
