What's included

Class Experience

This gifted course will be a combination of 4-5th grade science taught by a certified science teacher. The class is quickly filling up, and is one of Mrs. Collins' most popular classes. Reserve your child's spot today. Since the class is a FLEX class, students can join at anytime after the deadline. The lessons and videos will be waiting on you to begin when ready.

Teacher Reviews:
"Finally a science class with a high energy teacher that presents the material in a way that got my son excited about science. "-M. Torres (Arkansas)
"It is nice to have a real certified teacher teaching my daughter and leading science labs she enjoys."- T. Sherrol (Florida)

FORMAT-This course will follow the Outschool FLEX format. Each Sunday night by 10pm EST the next week's lesson/assignments will be uploaded. Each week the student will have 5 mini tasks to complete involving vocabulary, discussion questions, inquiry based discussion topics, and labs to recreate at home. It is recommended that all students log into the Outschool classroom a minimum of twice a week for 30-45 minutes for this science course. The class does not involve live sessions so families can begin when they are ready, but the classroom size is limited so reserve a spot early.
Assignments: Short chapters to read and respond to questions, true/false questions, fill in the blank questions, diagrams
Labs: Short labs will be given using common household or items found in nature.
Projects: Students will be given various projects to work on related to the current lesson for project based learning
    opportunities.
Assessments: Quiz/Test will be provided. These will involve various assessment techniques: matching games, read aloud
vocabulary, group practice, true/false, matching, and notecard practice.
What makes a flex class different from live instruction? This type of course allows the student to log into the classroom whenever it is convenient and work at their own pace. The lessons will be clearly labeled and on the class wall for the student to work on. The class will not have live sessions, only pre-recorded lessons/slideshow/task on the class wall. This allows for the student to log in when ready for the lesson, and move at their own pace. With flex classes; that means if the class dates are January 1-May 1, that means the student can join anytime in that time range. Flex classes mean flexible start and end date. If the student needs more time to finish the class, then let the instructor know you would like an extension. The joy of flex learning is the ability to join a flex class anytime, and move at your own pace in a low stress atmosphere. Be flexible. Learn flexible.

STUDENT SUBMISSIONS-Students will upload images of their finished work, diagrams, and pictures of lab steps to show their methods of comprehension along the way each week. In addition, they can upload video responses and written responses. *Students are encouraged to post images of rocks they have found, or share experiences at museums involving Earth Science.

Topics Of Study:
Week 1: Introductions, How To Use Outschool, Project Techniques, Pick A Project Topic, Scientific Method
Week 2: What Is Physical Science, Physical Science Careers
Week 3: Famous Physical Scientist
Week 4: What Is Gravity, Gravity Experiments
Week 5: Force, Force Experiments
Week 6: Acceleration, Acceleration/Movement Experiments
Week 7: Motion, Motion Experiments
Week 8: Unique Aspects Of Physical Science
Week 9: Project Week, Review, Exam Week

This course is 9 weeks long. Full 4-5th grade curriculum involve Earth Science, Physical Science and Life Science. This session covers Physical Science which means it is heavy in lab experiments. Please sign up for the other two nine week sessions too, if you like but it is not required.

How can FLEX courses benefit your child? FLEX is a new format of classes on the Outschool platform. This is great for students that prefer less student interaction, families that prefer a low key less stress classroom settings, families that travel, or students who prefer learning in a flexible format.

From Mrs. Collins:
I am a certified science teacher that teaches virtually for the school system from home part time. Because of that, I have a large amount of science items at home to share. If your student is interested in a particular area of science please let me know I would be happy to show diagrams, insect collections, rock/minerals, posters, etc to your student anytime. I plan to have an open Zoom time once or twice a week where my Outschool students can join for help, ask questions or just to share something science related.

PRE-REQUISITE/CLASS EXPECTATIONS-
1. Students may need help logging into the Outschool classroom, parents are asked to help the student log in each week and check in regularly on class progress/pacing goals. The class is setup for independent learning but parents will still need to check in to make sure the family pacing goals are being met.
2. The class is geared for 4-5th graders, with an age group of 9-12 years of age (but this is flexible).
3. This is a combination 4-5th grade class, so if you have two siblings that will be attending please register both children. That way the teacher can give feedback on both students instead of the one registration and both students can participate on the Outschool wall.
4. Students will be given online short chapters to read, these chapters will be on a 2nd-3rd grade reading level.
5. If your child has any learning difficulties, please make sure Mrs. Collins is aware. This class will involve independent learning at a gifted student pace.
6. This course was created for gifted students, so the amount of work, pacing, and lab inquiry based questions will be presented in an advanced format.
7. Mrs. Collins will be monitoring the class wall strictly, so students should only respond to other students in regards to classwork only and with positive feedback.
8. Parents will need to make sure students understand how to upload work. The first week will involve various practice assignments for parents and students to practice uploading.
9. Students need to be willing to log in a minimum of twice a week for the instruction and to interact with feedback on group discussions, projects, and assignments.
10. Students need to be shown how to upload images to the Outschool wall to upload diagrams and samples of work completed.
11. Students or parents can email Mrs. Collins on the Outschool platform using the Outschool inbox if they have any questions.

---------------------------
Mrs. Collins Flex Format:
My classes are flex classes. This means all the work is found on the class wall, with no live classes but students can message the teacher if help is needed. The class wall will be clearly labeled, by the week and #'ed tasks. Each week the student will have 5 mini tasks. Example: Week 1 Task 1, Week 1 Task 2, Week 1 Task 3, Week 1 Task 4 and Week 1 Task 5. Flex with Mrs. Collins means they are self-paced in many ways. 1) The start and end date is flexible. 2) Families that travel can take time off and return when ready. 3) Students can enjoy a low-stress environment moving at a pace that works for the family. 4) Families can request more time, if the end date needs to be extended. 5) Students can join a session with more students instead of being alone in a session or a session being canceled for low enrollment. I normally have one main session-August, September and/or January. Then I setup other secondary sessions throughout the year. If your child enrolls in a secondary session I will ask you if I can transfer them to the main session. Remember the sessions are flex so students join anytime; no one is ahead or behind. They join and begin Week 1 when ready. Families love this because 1)it allows the student to be in sessions with more students 2)allows students to see the work from other students, which helps with questions regarding how to complete assignments 3)allows for more group discussions 4)promotes student self-confidence overall. This is all part of the "joy of Outschool flex", which is now very popular with families. What is not included in flex learning, is uploading all of the weeks curriculum upfront. We are not allowed on in the business of selling our lessons upfront. So if you register for an 8-week course, please do not ask me to upload all 8 weeks' worth of lessons the first week. That is not allowed on the platform. Instead, I upload a week or two at a time each Sunday evening. This allows the curriculum to be slowly "dripped in" so self-pacing can occur. If you need a specific FLEX class, would like to request a tailored class on a science topic or would like to request a private class please message and let me know. I am here to help families meet their science education goals at home.

Learning Goals

This course will meet the standards needs for 4th and 5th grade science.

The full set of standards can be accessed by the parent at https://www.nextgenscience.org/sites/default/files/5%20combined%20DCI%20standardsf.pdf
