Class Experience

In this course “2nd grade Head Start/ Extra Practice: Foundations of Addition” Students will develop a firm foundation for place value and number sense before adding. Students will be taught using a variety of digital manipulatives and physical manipulatives. This is a 1 time course designed for incoming 2nd graders to prepare them and strengthen their foundational math skills that will be built upon for the rest of 2nd grade. Students will learn the foundations of addition using strategies that will be taught in the classroom. The lesson will be structured in the following way:

Check In/ getting to know you game
Vocabulary (base 10, place value chart, value, cube vs long, etc.)
 Introduction to Place Value
Value of numbers
Placing numbers in place value chart
Counting by 10s
“Kahoot” check for understanding

In order for students to be successful in this class, they should have background knowledge for adding 1 and 2 digit numbers and know basic math facts (ex. 2+7=9). I will teach using a variety of online manipulative, physical manipulatives and drawings. My teaching style focuses on being engaging, encouraging and making the learning environment a safe and comfortable place where students know that it’s okay to make mistakes because that is how we learn!

*Learners will need a whiteboard and marker (preferably) or a pencil and paper so they can follow along and do practice problems*

As an experienced 2nd grade teacher, I know the value of small group instruction and getting practice in foundational math skills will increase your learners confidence and help them gain a deeper understanding of math. They will be set up for success as the rest of 2nd grade will build on these concepts!

Learning Goals

Students will learn the foundations of addition and use place value strategies to gain a strong foundation in addition concepts.

Profile
Teacher expertise and credentials
Florida Teaching Certificate in English/Language Arts
I am a certified classroom teacher with a bachelor's degree in Elementary Education. I have taught 2nd grade for 2 years and I completed my internship in 5th grade and Kindergarten classrooms. I am reading endorsed and ESOL endorsed. Being a 2nd grade teacher, I know what math strategies are used in the classroom and what will be expected of your student. I believe small group instruction is incredibly valuable and that by learning 2nd grade concepts early, students will be able to gain a deeper understanding of the content once they are back in the classroom.
