Cursive writing is such an important life skill that is fun and exciting to learn! Each week we will practice letters that are similar to one another so students are using the same movements and will begin to understand not only how to make the cursive letters, but also refine their fine motor skills. For example, one week we would practice c, a and d because they all three use similar movements and this will help the students grasp it quickly without the overwhelm! Students will also be given an extra practice worksheet after each class to reinforce what we learned and to practice at home, while impressing their family and friends. Here’s my cursive writing curriculum designed to teach students foundational cursive skills progressively. It can be adjusted for different age groups and proficiency levels. Cursive Writing Curriculum Outline Grade Level: Suitable for Grades 2–6 and beginners of any age Duration: 12 weeks (flexible based on student progress) Objective: Students will learn to write legibly and fluently in cursive, including forming letters, connecting letters, and writing words and sentences. Weeks 9–10: Writing Words and Phrases • Objective: Achieve fluency in cursive word and phrase writing. • Focus: Building confidence and speed while maintaining legibility. • Activities: • Copy words, sentences, and quotes. • Practice spelling words in cursive. • Introduce creative writing prompts (e.g., “Write about your favorite hobby”). Weeks 11–12: Mastery and Practical Application • Objective: Use cursive writing for practical purposes. • Focus: Real-life applications and personal style development. • Activities: • Write personal letters, journal entries, or stories. • Learn to sign their name in cursive. • Engage in peer review for improvement. • Introduce fun projects, like designing a “Cursive Certificate of Achievement.” Assessment • Weekly review of progress through writing samples. • Final evaluation: Write a paragraph in cursive with minimal errors in letter formation, spacing, and connections. This curriculum can be supplemented with worksheets, online tools, and creative projects to make learning engaging and effective. Teacher qualifications: I have been writing in cursive for over 25 years. I have also taught many elementary students cursive writing in my public school classroom. This is an important life skill that I love teaching and want to encourage students to have fun with and love as well! Learners will be able to drop in any time! We will continuously review how to form the letters and words. Each week we will start off simple & easy, and end with a challenge to write a word or a few words so students of many different levels will be able to participate! The classes will not build upon one another. Once we go through all of the letters, the class will cycle through the same material. You are welcome to continue your child in the class for extra practice, or move on to one of my other cursive writing classes.
