Writing a personal recount can be a little tricky; we don’t have the creative freedom of a fictional story but we don’t want our factual recount to be boring, either.

Never fear!

In this one time class, we’ll look at how we can plan out a personal recount so that it fulfils our chronological order criteria and includes all of the features that it needs, without making it sound like a dull list of events.

We’ll explore organising our recount into paragraphs, using time connectives, simple past tense, descriptions, emotive language and writing a conclusion.

We’ll look at a recount together before learners write their own recounts based on a personal, familiar experience.

Time will be given for students to share their recounts by reading aloud if they wish. Although students will be encouraged to share their work, there is no pressure to do so.
If they prefer, students may upload their work to the classroom afterwards, or send it to me directly.

PLEASE NOTE:
When writing about a personal experience, learners should choose an event that does not use sensitive details or information that shouldn’t be shared (e.g. going on a shopping trip, a day out, on a walk, a visit to a theme park, etc)

Writing is my passion and as well as majoring in English at university, along with Theatre Arts, I've almost 20 years’ experience in teaching English in primary schools (4-11-year-olds). Over those years I have worked regularly with many groups of children specifically on English writing skills, including writing chronological personal recounts.
