In this interactive Outschool class, we'll use the acclaimed board game "World in Flames" to explore the military and foreign policy dimensions of this pivotal period in history. Starting in 1936, you'll navigate the prelude to war and the global conflict itself, strategizing and making critical decisions that will shape the course of history. The game ends when victory conditions are met for either side, allowing you to experience the thrill of triumph or the lessons of defeat. Don't worry if you're new to the game or if you have to miss a class. Our team-based approach ensures that you can jump in at any time and quickly get up to speed. You'll be assigned a power to make decisions for, and your teammates will help you catch up and contribute to your side's victory. This class is perfect for learners who are fascinated by history and enjoy strategic thinking. Whether you're a seasoned gamer or new to board games, you'll find this experience both educational and engaging. Join us for a unique journey through World War II, where history comes alive on the game board, and every decision counts. Enroll now and take your place among the decision-makers of a world at war! A preliminary schedule: Week of December 5th: We learn the basic boardgame rules together and go over the setup of the board for each power's starting positions. In parallel, we study the world situation of 1936 - which countries were powerful on the international stage, and what were their agendas? We study the tripolar world - democracies vs fascist states vs. communism in the Soviet Union. Week of December 12th: The game starts with the first turn. Learners will become familiar with how their power can make foreign policy and move units. We study the first 2 months of 1936 - what happened in real life on the international stage? Week of December 19th: We play the second turn, for Spring of 1936. How will learners build their countries' militaries preparing for what is to come? In the real world, Spain was in a precarious position, while Germany reoccupied the Rhineland and Italy conducted a war of colonial expansion in Ethiopia. How will the learners running the Allied powers react to these developments in the game? Week of December 26th: We play the third turn for early summer of 1936. In the real world, Italy annexed Ethiopia, violating League of Nations rules. How will the learners react to such a development? Can the League of Nations become more effective in the game than in real life?

Learners will need a Steam-account to log into the game, as the class will be using the Tabletop Simulator, available on Steam for about $10 US. Learners should log in using a desktop or laptop, with a mouse, to navigate the 3D boargame.
