This one-time live class will provide students with basic information on what parts of speech are and why they matter. Students will also learn about four English parts of speech: nouns, verbs, adjectives, and adverbs. Students will get the opportunity to self-check with small activities throughout the presentation, and then we'll transition to a set of group practice sentences. The small group means every student will have the opportunity to share their own thoughts and get feedback. A take-home worksheet with instructions and a short story will be provided for students who want further practice. I'm available to answer questions after the class if any come up. This is an introductory class, so no experience with parts of speech is necessary! This workshop does not cover all the parts of speech; it is part of a larger series (Grow with Grammar) that engages with specific topics in small groups to give students a chance to build on their skills overtime or to target specific skills they want extra practice with.

This class is designed with periodic interactive check-ins, visual aids, and multiple response options (i.e., speaking, typing, writing, TTS/other AAC, thumbs up/thumbs down, fingerspelling and/or basic ASL)

This class covers 4 main parts of speech. Parts of speech are an essential English grammar concept. Because I want to respect the wide range of accents, dialects, and vocabularies that have been developed by English speakers around the globe, I use a descriptive approach to language, rather than a prescriptive one. When talking about language rules, I will acknowledge differences between regions and communities and will do my best not to prioritize one over the other. I believe that students with a strong understanding of English in its many forms will be best equipped to understand as many others as possible and to develop their own voices confidently.
They won't be played in the presentation directly, but I will offer students YouTube link to Schoolhouse Rock grammar songs that I believe may be helpful for them. Listening to the songs is completely optional, and no third party account is required.

There are no pre-requisites for this workshop. This is the first module in the 'Grow with Grammar' series, which may be taken in order or as individual modules based on the topics the student is interested in or needs.

I will provide a slides presentation and a take-home worksheet. Students will need some way to interact with the materials, whether by printing them out and writing on them or downloading them and using digital editing/drawing tools.
