Learning to read can be stressful or joyful, depending on how it happens. As a preschool and kindergarten teacher, and as a mom, I’ve made learning phonics and sight words engaging and fun for many little ones. This class is aimed at those students that are ready to start their reading journey by learning to associate letters with sounds, whether they are in preschool, kindergarten, first grade... These are the Common Core kindergarten and 1st grade standards that correspond to this class: CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.L.K.1.A (kindergarten) Print many upper- and lowercase letters. CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.L.1.1.A (first grade) Print all upper- and lowercase letters. CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.L.K.1.F (kindergarten) Produce and expand complete sentences in shared language activities. CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.L.K.2.C (kindergarten) Write a letter or letters for most consonant and short-vowel sounds (phonemes). CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.L.K.2.D (kindergarten) Spell simple words phonetically, drawing on knowledge of sound-letter relationships. CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.L.1.2.E (first grade) Spell untaught words phonetically, drawing on phonemic awareness and spelling conventions.
I am licensed in Early Childhood Education. I taught preschool and kindergarten literacy for years, and I taught my own son how to read in English, Spanish, and French. I am also an ESL teacher (English as a Second Language), where I teach young children to read through phonics and sight words.
Students will need paper / a notebook and pencils / markers to write and draw.
