課堂經歷

In this Waldorf inspired class, young students will explore Creative Form Drawing as they develop an understanding of Line as an Element of Art. Through Form Drawing students will develop hand-eye coordination, spatial orientation, observation and concentration skills, and build a strong foundation for handwriting and art. Form Drawing is designed to incorporate movement of the whole body beginning with gross motor movement and culminating with fine motor practice.

This class is held two times a week and gives students multiple ways to experience and interact with each line and form before taking pencil or crayon to paper!

Each class will begin with a peaceful and predictable rhythm, positive intentions, and an opportunity for sharing and community building. Our fun and playful welcome song includes mindful breath work and centering movement designed to help children gently integrate their senses.

Classes will follow the same pattern each week:

Day 1: Introduction: To begin I will introduce and demonstrate how to form the "line of the week". We will learn the correct vocabulary term for the line, (horizontal, vertical, etc). We will them transition to "Gross Motor Movement" and "Moving the Form in Space." In this playful activity we will practice making the line using our whole bodies through movement, music, verse and playful interaction. This exercise develops motor planning, spatial awareness, and directional skills and helps integrate the senses through both vestibular and proprioceptive input. Students will engage both the right and left side of their body, cross midline, and gain motor memory as they create each form.

We will then transition to Play Dough and Sensory Play! Each week we will use a sensory medium to create line and form. These tactile activities will provide sensory input and help build core and hand strength while giving students an engaging way practice line and form through play.

Day Two: Drawing Forms of Paper and Art Study- On our second day the the large movements and sensory play are condensed and focused on the page. Students will put their observation, gross motor movement, and sensory play into fine motor practice as they explore line, create patterns, symmetry, and organize lines into aesthetic and meaningful ways. During this activity students will also be introduced to color theory as they experiment with color- creating forms and designs that are created using complementary, analogous, and monochromatic colors.

Finally at the end of each class, students will be introduced to an artist whose art depicts the form and the "line of the week". Artists include: Wassily Kandinsky, Karl Benjamin, Piet Mondrian, and Hilda Kint

Each class will culminate with students sharing and discussing their work. Students will be encouraged to comment positively and compliment one another. The instructor will provide feedback as needed.

Following our established rhythm, class will end with a short review, mindful breath, positive affirmation and goodbye song.

This is an ongoing class, students may join at anytime.

Week 1: Straight and Curve Lines, Creating Patterns
Week 2: Flowing Lines and Rhythm
Week 3: Circles and Color Theory
Week 4: Figure 8, Infinity, Mindful Breathing
Week 5: Zig Zags, Diamonds, and Lucky Stars
Week 6: Spirals, Spirals Everywhere!
Week 7: Circle and Ellipse- Warm and Cool Colors
Week 8: Symmetry and Mirroring: Above and Below, Right and Left

Welcome to The Friendly Forest School!

I come to you with a wealth of knowledge, classroom experience, and a passion for teaching young children though play.

My classes follow a Waldorf-inspired approach that focuses on the holistic development of children, ensuring that academic skills are nurtured in an engaging and imaginative manner.

A predictable peaceful rhythm, delightful melodies, American Sign Language, and captivating tales (often set in the Friendly Forest) infuse every lesson, making learning a joyful exploration!I

By embracing the ebb and flow of nature's cycles, my goal is to help children feel grounded, secure, and ready to absorb knowledge with open hearts and curious minds.

ABOUT ME:

My journey began in the summer of 2001 when I had an internship in Early Childhood Education at the Children's Museum of Indianapolis. After graduating from Purdue University with my Bachelors Degree, I began working as a social worker and case manager for young children in LaPorte, Indiana.

I then moved to Phoenix, AZ and started my journey in Special Education, working as an in-home therapist for children with Autism and other developmental disabilities. I specialized in building expressive language through American Sign Language. Additionally, I focused on treating the whole child though sensory integration and positive behavior support. In 2005 I was named by the Governor as Arizona's "Caregiver of the Year"!

In 2006, I obtained my Masters Degree in Special Education and began working in a K-6 Self Contained Classroom. During this time I worked to develop an award winning School-wide Positive Behavior Intervention Support program based entirely on peace and mindfulness. I was awarded the "You Make a Difference" award by the Osborn School District for my work on this project!

My daughter, Eleanor, was born in 2010. In 2013 I left the classroom to be a full-time mama. My youngest daughter, Annalise, was born in 2013. During this time I began to adopt Waldorf philosophies at home and began homeschool using Waldorf and Montessori inspired pedagogy.

In 2017, I started my own Early Childhood Center called "Let's Play Learning". The developmentally appropriate curriculum was based on the view that children learn best when they are actively exploring the natural world and a carefully constructed environment in the company of their caregiver and directed by loving, professionally prepared teachers. I closed my doors at the beginning of the pandemic and began teaching online, which I love!

In my classes I strive to create a culture of peace and mindfulness while teaching academic skills through nature, imaginative play, storytelling, and artistic expression.

I now live with my family just five minutes away from beautiful Lake Michigan.
