What Will Be Taught? In this class, students will learn the foundational concepts of Political Geography, focusing on complex and challenging topics like sovereignty, political boundaries, governance systems, and the forces affecting political stability. These concepts will be framed in a way that makes them more understandable and easier to apply to real-world scenarios. What Topics Will You Cover? The lesson will specifically cover the following topics within Political Geography: Sovereignty and Political Boundaries Sovereignty vs. autonomy vs. nationalism The challenges in defining and drawing political boundaries Gerrymandering and boundary disputes Governance Systems Differentiating between unitary and federal systems Real-World Applications Applying theory to examples like Brexit, Catalonian independence, and the South China Sea How Is Your Class Structured? The class will be structured to blend lectures, interactive activities, and discussions. The goal is to allow students to grasp complex concepts while engaging with the material in a way that solidifies their understanding. Class Breakdown (55 minutes): Introduction (5 mins): Quick icebreaker or thought question about political geography. Set the stage for why these concepts matter. Mini-Lecture/Exploration of Key Topics (20 mins): Brief explanation and definition of the key concepts (sovereignty, political boundaries, governance systems). Show real-world examples of complex issues like Brexit or Catalonian independence. Interactive Activity (15 mins): Case Study Discussion: Break the class into small groups to discuss a real-world issue, then report back with key takeaways. Polls/Quizzes Interactive Discussion (10 mins): A Q&A session where students can ask questions and discuss confusing topics in more depth. Provide a few guiding questions to stimulate critical thinking (e.g., "What is the relationship between political boundaries and sovereignty in a modern state?"). Wrap-up & Key Takeaways (5 mins): Review the key concepts and ask students to share one thing they learned or found interesting. Provide any additional resources or reading for further understanding. How Will You Teach? I will teach by blending direct instruction (lecturing) with active learning strategies. This will allow me to explain the foundational concepts, but also give students the opportunity to interact with the material in a way that promotes deeper understanding. The class will be primarily focused on vocabulary building, concept application, and critical thinking. What's Your Teaching Style? It will be engaging, interactive, and discussion-based. I will strive to make difficult concepts more accessible by providing clear, real-world examples, and facilitating group discussions that encourage students to apply the concepts to familiar scenarios. The approach will be student-centered. Active Listening: Students will be encouraged to share their thoughts and questions, making sure to address any misunderstandings promptly. Real-World Relevance: By focusing on real-world examples, students will be able to see the immediate applicability of political geography concepts in today's world. How Much Will Learners Get to Interact With You? Students will get multiple opportunities to interact with me during the class, including: Lecture (15-20 mins): A portion of the class will be lecture-style Interactive Polls/Quizzes (10-15 mins): Case Study Discussion (10-15 mins): Students will discuss case studies (such as Brexit or Catalonian independence). Q&A and Wrap-up (5 mins): Students will have the chance to ask questions and clarify any concepts they might not fully understand.

父母的引導和規範
The topics discussed in this unit may involve sensitive and potentially distressing content, including the exploitation of colonized peoples, forced labor, and violent resistance to imperial rule. Additionally, some discussions may touch on issues such as war, territorial disputes, and conflicts related to human rights. These topics can be emotionally intense, and while the class will address them with respect, we encourage parents to be aware that these conversations may evoke strong feelings. The goal is to present these issues in a balanced and educational manner, fostering critical thinking and respectful discussion among students.

I’ve been teaching for 10 years now, and for the past few years, I’ve taught AP Human Geography. Over the years, I’ve taught this subject at the high school level in public schools, and I’ve had the chance to work with a wide range of students. My experience has given me an understanding of how to break down complex topics like territorial disputes, political boundaries, geopolitics, and the legacy of imperialism into concepts that students can grasp and apply.
I’ve also worked as an AP reader, which has been a huge benefit in my teaching. It’s given me a better understanding of how the AP exams are scored and what exactly graders are looking for in student responses. I bring that knowledge back to my classroom, helping students prepare for how to approach and answer the FRQs (Free Response Questions) and multiple-choice sections effectively.
When it comes to working with students, I’ve spent time with students between the ages of 13-19. I’ve taught in traditional classrooms, but I’ve also worked with students in resource classes and provided extra support after school hours. My goal is to create a space where students feel comfortable asking questions, working through challenges, taking ownership of their learning, and ultimately teaching them that they can do anything they put their minds to.
I believe in making learning relatable, particularly in the realm of political geography, and I always try to bring real-world connections to the content. I’m confident in my ability to meet the needs of students on the Outschool platform. I aim to help students understand the political world around them, encouraging critical thinking and a deeper understanding of global political dynamics.
