It is hard to imagine the history of the United States without a Supreme Court. Yet, without the most critical case in the Court's history, Marbury v Madison, the Court might well lack the power we take for granted today. Here we will explore the specifics of each case and the short and long-term impacts of each, and how each shaped American society. Through this examination of these landmark cases, students will gain knowledge of each case and how each changed society. By examining each case, students will develop greater critical thinking skills and understand each case from multiple perspectives. Sept 13 - Week 1: Marbury v. Madison and McCulloch v. Maryland Sept 20 - Week 2: Worcester v. Georgia and Dred Scott v Sept 27 - Week 3:Plessy v. Ferguson and Weeks v. the United States Oct. 4 - Week 4: Schenck v. the United States and Olmstead v. the United States Oct 11 - Week 5: Powell v. Alabama, 1932 & West Coast Hotel v. Several cases covered in this class will examine racial discrimination (Plessy v Ferguson). These were and are significant milestones in America's progress towards equality for all. Cases such as Roe v. Wade and Obergefell v. Hodges will NOT be covered as I view them as inappropriate for this course's age range.

I have more than twenty years of experience as a history teacher. Specifically, I taught United States history and American Government. I gave extensive attention to covering the Constitution, the Bill of Rights, and Supreme Court history in those classes. Numerous landmark cases were covered in great detail. I also taught a class titled Law and Order, in which students took part in mock trials.
