This 12-week course is designed for middle and high school students who are interested in both books and films. To ensure class time is focused on discussion, question and response, thought processing and engagement, all reading will be done outside of class. Students will be asked to read 1-3 chapters between classes so that they are prepared for in-class discussions and debate. We will watch film versions of the books in class and use these viewings as the basis for comparison, contrast,...
In this course, students can expect to: Improve their reading and comprehension abilities Develop a thorough understanding of characterization and plot in literature and film Engage in thoughtful, respectful, discussions with peers and the instructor Compare, contrast, and analyze media interpretations of literary works Strengthen their ability to debate, defend and justify written and verbal responses Develop a new appreciation for reading, literature, and film
I have taught English Language Arts and ESL at the middle and high school levels for nearly 15 years. I hold a BA in English Language and Literature and an MA in ESL with a focus on theoretical and applied linguistics. Prior to my full-time work with students online I have served as an instructional coach, reading interventionist, building administrator and Secondary English Specialist for a large school district. I hold an active teaching license as well as a principal's license. My areas of expertise are English Language Arts (reading, writing, speaking), American and Historical Literature, Social and Emotional Learning, Philosophy, Essay and Fiction Writing and Self-Improvement.

It should be noted that the novels and films used in this course contain certain actions and references that some families may find inappropriate for their learner. I'd like to briefly note potentially objectionable content so that parents can make an informed decision about the fitness of this class for their student. In the novels and films students will be exposed to violence, smoking, alcohol and brief nudity. Sensitive topics are always treated with objectivity and with reference to context.
