課堂經歷

This one-hour session is perfect for students interested in global affairs and efforts to maintain international peace and security.

In this class, we:

- Explore the origins of the United Nations and why it was founded.

- Learn about the key purposes and principles of the UN.

- Explore the main organs of the UN, including the General Assembly, Security Council, International Court of Justice, and more.

- Learn about the roles and responsibilities of these bodies in global governance.

- Talk about major UN missions and peacekeeping efforts around the world.

- Discuss significant achievements of the UN, including the promotion of human rights, advacements in sustainable development, and the provision of humanitarian aid.

- Examine some of the challenges and criticisms the UN faces in its efforts to maintain global peace and security, and

- Discuss how the UN is working to address these issues and improve its effectiveness.

My teaching style is interactive and student-centered, ensuring that every participant is engaged and actively involved. This includes:

- Interactive Discussions: We’ll begin with an introduction and background on the UN, followed by engaging discussions where students can ask questions and share their thoughts.

- Multimedia Resources: Our class includes videos, infographics, and other multimedia resources to make learning about the UN interesting and accessible.

- Real-World Examples: We will look at real-world examples of UN missions and their impacts, helping students connect theoretical knowledge with practical applications.

Students should (ideally) come prepared to:

1. Participate Actively: Be ready to discuss, ask questions, and engage in activities.

2. Think Critically: Analyze the role of the UN from multiple perspectives and consider its successes and challenges.

3. Stay Curious: Maintain an open mind and a willingness to learn about global issues and international cooperation.

By the end of this class, students will have a solid understanding of the history, structure, and impact of the United Nations, and they will be equipped with knowledge that will help them become informed global citizens.

父母的引導和規範
This course discusses complex and sometimes sensitive global issues related to international peace and security. While the content is designed to be appropriate for the intended age group, parents should be aware of the following topics that may arise during the session: 1. Global Conflicts and Peacekeeping: Our class will cover the United Nations’ involvement in global conflicts and peacekeeping missions. This may include discussions of wars, military interventions, and humanitarian crises. These topics will be handled with sensitivity, but they may involve references to violence, suffering, and political tensions. 2. Human Rights and Humanitarian Issues: We will explore the UN’s role in addressing human rights abuses, including those related to war, displacement, and poverty. Discussions may include the impact of these issues on vulnerable populations, which could be distressing to some students. 3. Political Controversies and Criticisms: The course will touch on criticisms and challenges faced by the UN, including debates over its effectiveness and the political complexities of global governance. These discussions may involve contentious viewpoints and controversial topics. 4. Ethical Considerations: Ethical dilemmas related to international interventions, the use of force in peacekeeping, and the balancing of national interests with global responsibilities will be discussed, which may provoke thoughtful but challenging reflections. These topics are introduced in an age-appropriate manner, with a focus on fostering critical thinking and global awareness. However, parents should consider their child’s sensitivity to such issues and are encouraged to discuss the course content with them to ensure they feel comfortable and supported.

The following list of books is not exhaustive of the material that will be covered in this class but is intended to provide context and deeper insights into the themes we will explore. While some of these books may be accessible to older students and can certainly enhance their understanding of the topics discussed, there is no expectation for students to read these materials. I will however, be providing relevant and up-to-date resources, including YouTube clips and PDF newspaper articles from sources like The Economist and The Guardian, that are of greater relevance to young learners. These materials will be carefully selected to complement our discussions and are more likely to engage and appeal to students. • “The United Nations: A Very Short Introduction” by Jussi M. Hanhimäki - this is a concise overview of the UN’s history, structure, and impact on global politics. • “The Parliament of Man: The Past, Present, and Future of the United Nations” by Paul Kennedy - an insightful analysis of the UN’s role in shaping global affairs and its potential future challenges. • “The International Human Rights Movement: A History” by Aryeh Neier - a comprehensive look at the evolution of human rights advocacy, with a focus on the UN’s involvement. • “The UN and Human Rights: Who Guards the Guardians?” by Guglielmo Verdirame, Baron Verdirame - an examination of the UN’s role in promoting and protecting human rights globally. • “The UN Security Council in the 21st Century” edited by Sebastian von Einsiedel, David M. Malone, and Bruno Stagno Ugarte - a collection of essays analyzing the role of the UN Security Council in contemporary global security matters. • “The Responsibility to Protect: Ending Mass Atrocity Crimes Once and For All” by Gareth Evans - a key text on the UN’s doctrine of the responsibility to protect (R2P) and its implications for international interventions.

I hold a master’s degree in history and have previously taught at high school level, where I developed a deep appreciation for engaging young minds with the stories of our past.

For the last eight years, I have then also homeschooled my own children, which has given me valuable insights into personalized and flexible teaching methods.

I also have a deep interest in current world events and have read extensively in this area over more than two decades.
