課堂經歷
In this four day course, students will learn about how humans transitioned from hunters and gatherers to settled farmers. They will understand that because humans now lived in permanent villages that new institutions such as religion, economies, and social classes developed. They will also learn about the geography of these earliest civilizations in Mesopotamia, Egypt, India, and China and how geography impacted how the people in those civilizations lived. Students will gain an understanding of the circumstances that led to the rise of empires and also to the fall of empires. This class is lecture based but involves lots of opportunities for students to participate in discussions and ask questions. Short video clips are also used to present content in multiple ways. All presentations, video clips, and activities will be provided and linked in the classroom for use during and after class. No prior knowledge is required. Day 1: Students will learn about life during the Paleolithic Era and how humans transitioned from hunter/gatherers to farmers. Day 2: Students will learn about the changes that took place as humans developed religions, politics, and economies. Day 3: Students will learn about the geography of these first civilizations and how geography impacted how people lived. Day 4: Students will learn about what causes empires to rise and fall.

I have taught World History in the public school system for the past 5 years. Teaching the rise of civilizations is one of my favorite topics because students are able to see where so many of our practices originated and how our settled life compared to the life of nomadic hunters and gatherers.
