課堂經歷
In this class, students will work together as we navigate the Oregon Trail in the classic 1990 computer game. The journey involves strategic planning and unexpected challenges as we guide our wagon party from Independence, Missouri to the Willamette Valley in Oregon in the mid-1800s. Students will work together to make decisions such as what supplies to purchase, how to cross rivers, when to hunt, and how to survive the trek to Oregon. I will also share information on the real journey on the...
Students will develop a basic understanding of the Oregon Trail including both problem solving skills and collaboration.
I have taught students about the Oregon Trail for most of my teaching career. In August of 2023, I visited Independence, Missouri, the starting point of the Oregon Trail and visited the National Frontier Trails Museum. As a historical interpreter, I am familiar with many of the tools used by pioneers during this era.

The game does mention some of the real dangers that pioneers faced including sicknesses such as dysentery and cholera, drowning, and death. None of the content is graphic. It also should be noted that The Oregon Trail game serves as a basic introduction to the historic journey through the eyes of pioneers. It is not meant to encompass all historical aspects of Westward Expansion or provide the perspective from the Native Peoples. There are stereotypes of Native Peoples that are not accurate, including the use of the term "Indians" as opposed to "Native Americans" or "American Indians". The negative impacts of Westward Expansion on the native peoples are not mentioned in this game (overhunting, negative depictions, loss of land, etc.), but will be mentioned in the lesson.
Students will be introduced to the Oregon Trail and in addition to participating in the game, discussions may include information from these sources: Visit Oregon, the National Oregon/California Trail Center, and a NearPod Original video (2:11) that gives a general overview of the historic trail. https://www.visitoregon.com/the-oregon-trail-game-online/ https://oregontrailcenter.org/historic-trails https://app.nearpod.com/?pin=2D43F790893EED5FABB339EDCADF7A64-1&&utm_source=link
