By the end of the course, the student will be able to:
-Describe major characters and plot developments
-Analyze the text for figurative language (I.E. Symbolism, flashback, conflict, mood, tone, etc.)
-Explain major themes in the novella 
-Describe the writing style of Ernest Hemingway
-Verbally articulate their opinions of the novella and writing of Hemingway
-Analyze the figurative language used by Ernest Hemingway through a written culminating assignment

I have been working in the Special Education/English field for 15 years.  I specialize in supporting struggling students’ reading, writing, and language development in the high school setting (grades 9-12).  My teaching experience has included multiple grade levels, a wide variety of student abilities, and many different teaching settings and styles.  "The Old Man and the Sea" is a wonderful novella to use in teaching higher-level literary analysis skills.  The simple language allows students to learn and develop their literary analysis skills without getting lost in a challenging text.  This novella is one of my favorites and my enthusiasm for the text is contagious!  Santiago is my hero!
