In this class we will learn about the American West during the 19th century. The topics covered will be those depicted in the art and photography we look at, such as the diversity of the West, the importance of art in creating parks in the West, and the way of life for people who lived in the West. The structure of this class will be informal discussion with a great deal of learner participation. I'll provide some basic skills in analyzing art and photography, as well as background when needed to help learners make sense of what they are looking at. I will provide slides with the photographs and paintings we will discuss. The only thing learners need for this class is a willingness to share their ideas and be courteous to others when they speak.
學習目標
The goal is for students to gain knowledge about what life was like during the 1800s in the United States. It is likely the reality is rather different from what they may have seen on television and in video games.

來源
Because this class examines Western History through art and photography, the sources used in this class are the paintings and photographs themselves. Artists will be figures such as George Catlin, Charles Russell, and Albert Bierstadt. The photographs come mainly from government survey expeditions that took place during the 1870s.
The paintings and photographs are primary sources. The descriptions of life in the American West come from such noted western historians as Elliott West, Dan Flores, Patricia Limerick Nelson, Walter Prescott Webb, Donald Worster, and numerous others.
