課堂經歷
Let’s talk South Korean cinema! There has been a huge uptick in the popularity of Korean cinema in the past few years. For some people, it started with Bong Joon-Ho’s “Parasite” winning the Academy Award for Best Picture in 2020. For others, K-pop and K-dramas were their introduction. But what if I told you South Korea has been, consistently, producing amazing motion pictures all throughout the 20th and 21st centuries? *We will watch all genres, but with a particular focus on psychological thrillers and horror produced in the 21st century, as they tend to have the biggest emotional, and intellectual, impact. In this on-going class, we’ll watch some of my all-time favorites and discuss the complex themes and ideas in each. But please know, requests are always welcome! These classes are part film appreciation, part analysis, and total “geek-out” fun! Students are required to watch each movie BEFORE class so that a full, and lively, discussion can be had in class. *Please note: Many of these movies are rated PG-13 or R and may contain violence, adult language, and/or behavior. I advise all parents to watch these films before their children watch them. I have listed the rating after each title. November 21: Parasite - R November 28: Forgotten - TV-MA December 5 : The Wailing - NR (at least a PG-13) December 12: I Saw the Devil - NR (but a definite R) December 19: The Royal Tailor - 13+ December 26: Memoir of a Murderer - 16+ January 2: The Piper - 13+ January 9: The Host - R January 16: Montage - 16+ January 23: Mother - R January 30: Along with the Gods: The Two Worlds - NR (PG-13) February 6: Along with the Gods: The Last 49 Days - 13+ February 13: Memories of Murder - R February 20: Bluebeard - TV-14 February 27: Train to Busan - 13+ March 6: A Tale of Two Sisters - R March 13: Flu - 13+ March 20: Confession of Murder - NR (R) March 27: Metamorphosis - NR (R)

父母的引導和規範
Please note that the movies watched in this course are PG-13, TV-14, 16+, and R, with most of them being R. If you are concerned about your child watching PG-13, TV -14, or R rated movies, you can watch the movie trailer, pre-watch the movie yourself, check the synopsis on Wikipedia, and/or go to Common Sense Media to see what might be in the movie that could be concerning for your child. If you are uncomfortable with your child watching a particular movie, please skip that week and rejoin for a different movie on a subsequent week.
Our discussions will be focused on theme, tone, common (or uncommon) tropes, story structure, camera angles/shot construction, effectiveness, and other filmmaking techniques. Occasionally, sensitive topics might come up if the movie addresses them. We will have constructive discussions around these sensitive topics regarding how they relate to the film and society at large.
