Each week we will examine the life of a child who has changed the world. We will also learn practical skills to help develop confidence, range, power, and emotion as speakers. The ten weeks of classes are outlined below: Week One: Kid President - Presentation style Week Two: Anne Frank - Emotional expression Week Three: Nkosi Johnson - Pace tone volume Week Four: Claudette Colvin - Focussed messaging Week Five: Iqbal Masih - Act and speak ethically Week Six: Malala Yousafzai - Exhibit confidence and poise Week Seven: Louis Braille - Lead a discussion Week Eight: Greta Thunberg - Connect with your audience Week Nine: Boyan Slat - Gesture Week Ten: Samantha Smith - Research your topic The class will begin with an introduction to the child we are studying. We will then learn about the child and their life and discuss significant accomplishments and influence. We will then examine that child speaking and/or, as appropriate, read from some of their writing. Students will each be encouraged to read aloud and, as we read, I will introduce the students to skills that can help them build confidence, expressiveness, and communicate with authenticity, skill, and ease. Classes will be highly interactive, for example, students reading, observing speakers by listening to each other, and watching video recordings of kids speaking. Students will also be involved in discussions and debate and, be invited to comment constructively and sensitively on each other's work.

Students will improve their knowledge of history by learning about the lives of children who changed the world. Students will also learn and practice practical skills to help them develop confidence when speaking across a range of social and professional settings, for example, online learning environments, speech and debate teams, speaking up in class, and developing confidence with everyday communication. Key learning objectives for this class:
Understanding presentation style - How can we engage with the audience in the way they need and deliver our message in an impactful way?
Emotional expression - How can we speak authentically and communicate our emotions?
Pace, Tone, and Volume - How can we use pace, tone, and volume to maximize the impact of our communication?
Focussed messaging - What do I want to say and how can I stick to my message? How can I speak with focus and clarity?
Act and speak ethically - Understanding the power and influence of speech.
Exhibit confidence and poise - Confidence and poise are key skills for public speaking? How can we develop and practice these skills?
Lead a discussion - Students will be invited to think about how to engage an audience during a discussion.
Connect with your audience - How can we use eye contact, posture, and non - verbal communication to connect with our audience?
Gesture - How can we use gestures when we speak to give meaning to our message?
Research - What's my topic? What message are you trying to convey? What's the most effective way to do this?

This course will explore the lives of children who may have survived difficult circumstances, for example, war, oppression, genocide, and extreme poverty. I will let you know in advance of each session of any specific content that might be sensitive or triggering and work with you to discuss strategies and interventions to support your child when exploring the topic.
