課堂經歷

This class intends to provide a holistic experience with immersion in the Swahili language. Swahili is the fourteenth most spoken language in the world and derives from East Africa. Each topic is relevant to real life situations that would be pertinent to living in a Swahili spoken culture. Please note that  our "INTRODUCTION TO SWAHILI" course must be taken to take this course. 

Week 1: “Darasani” In the Classroom
Objective: To be in a real life classroom situation with relevant dialogue and vocabulary.
I. VIVGreeting: Kusalimia
● Shikamoo, mwalimu (I respect you, teacher)
● Marahaba (Thank you for your respect)
● Hamjambo? (How are you all?)
● Hatujambo. (We are good.)
● Karibu Darasani! (Welcome to class)
II. Communicating with Teacher: Kuongea na mwalimu
● Polepole (slowly)

Ms. Brink received cultural and linguistic training while in the U.S. Peace Corps as an education volunteer in Tanzania. There, she learned Swahili and utilized it in informal and formal settings to teach and communicate with locals from 2012 to 2013. Since, she has used it to help refugees, translate presentations, and to communicate with clients and international students while also living in Kenya for an additional two years.
