Students will complete the reading assignments outside of the club meetings, though we will read segments together during our discussions. In addition to reading assignments completed outside of club, there are brief writing assignments and a creative final project. We will have brief lectures, group discussions and small group work. I incorporate plenty of time for students to talk, as I believe this helps them learn and retain information. *This is a summer club, so all assignments are optional.* The following is a rough breakdown of the two week club schedule: Week 1 Class A ~Chapters 1 and 2: Briefly discuss the historical time period (civil rights movement)/Discuss beginning plot and characters/Discuss final project ~Chapters 3 and 4: Continue plot and character development of Lily, Rosaleen, and T.Ray/ discuss and mini-chart/share whole group/Discuss assignments for next class Week 1 Class B ~Chapters 5 and 6: Review assignments from week 2/Discuss the Boatwright sisters/Practice making inferences and citing from the text ~Chapters 7 and 8: Compare and contrast Rosaleen and the Boatwright sisters/Discuss whole group/Status update on final projects/Discuss assignments for next class Week 1 Class C ~Chapters 9 and 10: Describe Zach using adjectives and text citations/ Discuss the sad event in this section of the story ~Chapters 11 and 12: Identify the mood and the tone of these chapters and compare and contrast them to the chapters when Lily and Rosaleen first came to the Boatwright home/Discuss final project for the next class Week 1 Class D ~Chapters 13 and 14: Summarize the plot and character development of various characters Share final projects and wrap up story discussion

I am a certified ELA teacher in grades 9-12. The Secret Life of Bees is frequently taught in public and private high schools because it is a "high interest" story that students find engaging. It has strong plot and character development, as well as liberal use of literary devices. I have taught this book for many years and address the sensitive topics the same way I address the sensitive topics in frequently taught classics such as Of Mice and Men and The Lord of the Flies, by open discussion and by modeling maturity and sensitivity to the issues.
