In this full common core kindergarten curriculum- I will make your child thrive in kindergarten. This class will help your child advance in kindergarten. You can take this while in kindergarten, to prepare for Kindergarten or catch up before first grade! In kindergarten, students will learn the alphabet and the basic features of letters and words. They will break down spoken and written words into syllables and letters and identify the sounds each letter makes. These important skills will enable them to learn new words and to read and understand simple books and stories. Students will also learn to write and share information in a variety of ways, including drawing, writing letters and words, listening to others, and speaking aloud. Week 1: Letters A, B, C, D Color Word: red Sight words: we, go, a, I Focus Word: cat Phonemic Awareness: Rhyming Math: Counting 1-10, understanding/representing numbers 1-5, introducing shapes. Week 2: Letters E, F, G, H Color Word: red Sight words: we, go, a, I Focus Word: cat Phonemic Awareness: Rhyming Reading Skill : Text to self connections Math: Counting 1-15, understanding/representing numbers 1-10, subitizing numbers, introducing more 2d shapes. Week 3: Letters I, J, K, L Color Word: yellow Sight words: on, like, to, me Word Work: can & dog ( introducing CVC words) Phonemic Awareness: Rhyming Reading Skill : Text to text connections Math: Calendar Time, Counting 1-20, subitizing numbers, 2d shapes Week 4: Letters M, N, O, P Color Word: yellow Sight words: on, like, to, me Word Work: fan & log ( introducing CVC words) Phonemic Awareness: Syllables, continuing to work on rhyming Reading Skill : Reviewing text to text and text to self reading strategies, using begging sounds to help us decode a word. Math: Calendar Time, Counting 1-30, subitizing numbers up to 10, 3d shapes Week 5: Letters Q, R, S, T Color Word: blue Sight words: the, do, you Word Work: mat & jet ( CVC words) Phonemic Awareness: Syllables and Rhyming Reading Skill: Making predictions Week 6: Letters: U, V, W, X Color Word: blue Sight words: here, it Word Work: sit & map ( CVC words) Phonemic Awareness: Syllables, phoneme blending ( being able to hear the sounds of the word, put the sounds together and tell the word.) Reading Skill: Making predictions, pointing to words/one to one correspondence. Math: Calendar Time, Counting 1-50, patterns. Week 9: Vowels, CVC words, learning the “sh’ digraph. Color Word: Orange Sight words: am, she, see Word Work: CVC words Phonemic Awareness: Syllables, phoneme segmentation, rhyming Reading: Retelling, Review Parts of a Story Reading Strategy: Using picture clues, and sight words. Math: Calendar Time, Counting 1-80, counting by tens, counting by 5s, addition. We will also be working on number sense: understanding numbers up to 20, intro to place value. Week 10: Color Word: Orange Sight words: am, she, see Word Work: CVC words, short a word families. Phonemic Awareness: Rhyming Reading: Text to text connections, Review Parts of a Story Reading Strategy: Using picture clues, and sight words. Math: Calendar Time, 80 family, number words Activities in these areas will include: • Naming and writing upper and lowercase letters • Matching letters to sounds and using other methods to figure out unfamiliar words when reading and writing • Learning and using new words • Identifying words that rhyme • Reading common words such as the, of, you, are, she, and my • Asking and answering questions about a story the teacher reads out loud • Identifying characters, settings, and major events in a story • Recognizing the person, place, thing, or idea that an illustration shows • Participating in discussions by listening and taking turns speaking • Using a combination of drawing, speaking, and writing to describe an event, give information about a topic, or share an opinion • Taking part in shared reading, writing, and research projects • Expressing thoughts, feelings, and ideas clearly English Language Arts (Excerpt from Parent Roadmaps to Common Core Standards, Council of the Great City Schools) We will learn/review a new letter and sound and/or number focus. Two days a week will be focused on Language Arts, and two days a week will have a math focus. Please be sure to bring a whiteboard, dry erase marker, and eraser or a piece of paper and pencil. Additionally, I lead a dynamic and interactive reading group, where we explore the enchanting world of literature together.
I hold a Bachelor's degree in International Studies. Over the past 15 years, I have been dedicated to honing my teaching skills through various roles in both public and private educational settings. This experience has equipped me with a deep understanding of the unique needs and potentials of young learners at every stage.
At the heart of my teaching philosophy lies a belief in the transformative power of a nurturing and inclusive learning environment. I see each child as a unique individual, deserving of respect, encouragement, and the freedom to express themselves authentically. I am committed to fostering a love for learning by infusing creativity, curiosity, and a sense of wonder into every lesson.
